Holovousy Chateau originated from a fortress first mentioned in writing in 1433 and converted into a Renaissance chateau around 1594. The Holovousy Trail passes through places in Holovousy and Chodovice associated with local legends and historical sights. Holovousy Chateau is one of the trail’s stops; it then continues to Chodovice.
Culture and History
At the entrance to the Church of Saint Bartholomew in Chodovice, the date “Anno 1756” is inscribed. The exterior wall contains the tombstones of Václav Karlík and Jan Karlík of Nežetice. The church is a single-nave building with a pentagonal presbytery and a massive prismatic tower topped by an onion dome with a lantern and onion finial. It serves as a venue for concerts, exhibitions, religious services, weddings, and theatrical performances.
In the Holovousy Chateau game park, a Slavic hillfort dates from the first half of the 9th century. It is listed in the state register of immovable cultural monuments. The 18th edition of the Slavnosti sv. Bartoloměje in Holovousy was announced for Sunday, 25 August 2024; the pilgrimage programme had already been scheduled for Saturday, 24 August, with an organ concert in the Church of Saint Bartholomew.
Landscape and Nature
The protected Holovouská lípa lime tree stands on the road between Holovousy and Chodovice and has a trunk circumference of 4.15 metres.
Local Traditions
Another stop on the trail is the village square in Holovousy, where historic apple and pear varieties are planted, including Holovouské malinové. This historic apple variety is no longer widely cultivated today and is found only as a standard tree. Its history dates back to the 18th century and is associated with French families who came to the estate in Holovousy.
The Slavnosti holovouských malináčů takes place on the first Saturday in October. It was established as an annual event and is a regular part of the autumn events in Holovousy and the entire region. Since the first edition, competitions for the tastiest malináč apple and the best apple pie have been held every year at the Slavnosti holovouských malináčů.
