Žleby combines an impressive castle landscape with remarkable insights into history and nature. The English-style landscape park covers approximately 24 hectares and makes use of the steep castle slope and the canyon-like meander of the Doubrava. Žleby Castle is first mentioned in 1289; the Gothic castle was probably founded by the Lords of Lichtenburg.
Culture
At Žleby Castle, several tour routes explore different historical periods. “The Magic of a Romantic Chateau” includes reception rooms, an armoury with a special collection of weapons and armour, romantic interiors, a Renaissance arcade courtyard with galleries, and the historic castle kitchen with operational and food-preparation rooms. “Life at the Chateau” presents the private salons, bedrooms and studies of the Auersperg family, servants’ quarters, historical hygiene facilities, and the castle chapel of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. The “A Chateau Born from a Castle” tour includes the Great Tower with access to a viewing walkway, romantic chambers, cellars, and the basement of the medieval castle.
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Žleby is a Renaissance building dating from 1540 that was altered in the 19th century. Its complex includes a two-storey Neo-Renaissance Auersperg burial chapel dating from 1822, which stands centrally in front of the western façade. The church and the separate Auersperg burial chapel are protected monuments. The Žleby bell tower stands on a terrace above the right bank of the Doubrava and has a timber-clad upper storey.
Smaller architectural monuments also form part of the townscape: the Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity is one of Žleby’s cultural monuments and lies west of the town towards Markovice. The small plastered brick chapel with a rectangular ground plan bears the year 1867; the restoration year 1976 is engraved below it, and the front niche contains a wall painting of the Holy Trinity. The Marian Column is also one of Žleby’s cultural monuments. The Zámek Kačina chateau is also located in the vicinity of Žleby; the Church of St George lies in the wider regional area.
Nature
The Žleby Game Reserve is open to the public and allows visitors to observe a tame herd of white deer during feeding from a distance of 15 metres. Flight demonstrations with birds of prey and owls are also offered there. Guided tours give visitors the opportunity to get closer to the animals.
A red-marked hiking trail leads from Žleby via Ronov nad Doubravou, Žlebské Chvalovice, the mountain Krkanka located near Žleby, and Rudov to the ruins of Lichnice Castle.
Landscape
The Na Spravedlnosti hill [Ronov nad Doubravou] lies in the immediate vicinity of Žleby. The surrounding area also includes Višňovka [Podhořany u Ronova], a hill, and Bučina, a mountain.
