Rataje nad Sázavou combines a medieval town layout with distinctive traces of its castle history and paths through the Sázava Valley. The town fortifications ran along the edge of the peninsula on whose plateau the town stands. The Lower Gate and part of the eastern moat have survived from the ring of fortifications.
Culture and History
Pirkštejn Castle stands on a spur extending from a larger peninsula that slopes down toward the town of Rataje nad Sázavou. The Lords of Lipé built the lower castle. Today, Pirkštejn is a preserved ruin; its palace, tower and service buildings were used for the local parish office during the Baroque period.
The Church of Saint Matthew is also part of the town's history. It was rebuilt and consecrated on 21 September 1691. The area, with its archaeological finds, is designated as a medieval town with two castles.
Castle and Art
During a guided tour of the historic rooms of Rataje nad Sázavou Castle, visitors see several representative and private interiors. They include furnishings dating from the second half of the 18th century to the first third of the 20th century.
The castle also houses a long-term art exhibition about Jiří Václav Hampl and Marie Uchytilová. Thus, alongside the history of the building and the town, the interiors and art are also central themes.
Cycling Loop and Walk
Rataje nad Sázavou lies on the approximately 30 km-long Cycling Loop 3/C. The route runs from Sázava via Talmberk and Rataje nad Sázavou, as well as other places, and back to Sázava.
A separate walking route follows in the footsteps of Jindřich from Kingdom Come: Deliverance. It begins in Rataje nad Sázavou, is 14 km long and is estimated to take 4.5 hours. The path leads from the Sázava Valley into the town, through a stone gate and to a view of Pirkštejn Castle.
At the Sázava Weir
Immediately above the Rataje weir lies the Bořeň water sports camp, with cabins and catering facilities.
