Zákolany is situated in the valley of the Zákolanský potok stream, and its history is closely connected with the history of Budeč.

History and Culture

Budeč is home to the pre-Romanesque Rotunda of St Peter and Paul. It is considered the oldest surviving stone building in the Czech Republic. Tours of the rotunda are organised by the Sládečkovo vlastivědné muzeum in Kladno.

Antonín Zápotocký was born in Zákolany in 1884. Musically, the village is associated with the Zákolanská polka, which appears in Bedřich Smetana’s opera “Dvě vdovy”.

Kováry is home to the Chapel of St Isidore, built in 1781, which occasionally hosts exhibitions. It underwent extensive restoration in 2025.

The romantic surroundings of the Zákolanský potok stream are associated with artists from the Mařák School of Landscape Painting, including Ant. Slavíček, Jaroslav Panuška and Otakar Lebeda. Budeč is ideal for leisurely walks and contemplative hikes through the countryside.
