Vitice combines impressive evidence of Central Bohemian history with distinctive paths and landscape features. At its heart is the Church of St. Simon and Jude, which ranks among the most valuable examples of Gothic architecture in Central Bohemia.

Culture and History

The protected area of the Church of St. Simon and Jude comprises the church, the bell tower, the surrounding wall and the gate. The church has late Romanesque origins dating from the early 13th century and was rebuilt in the Gothic style around 1380. The bell tower beside the church is a Renaissance tower built shortly before 1560 and preserves an original bell from the same year.

Above Lipany, the Lipanská mohyla monument commemorates Prokop Holý; the monument was unveiled on 4 September 1881. Since 1965, the Lipanská mohyla has been included in the state register of cultural monuments. Historical re-enactments of the Battle of Lipany have taken place there every May to this day.

Other historical sites in Vitice include a niche chapel built in 1920 for a Baroque sandstone statue of St. John of Nepomuk dating from around 1780. The manor house with farmyard No. 1 in Lipany (Vitice, Kolín District) probably stands on the site of a medieval fortress. The manor house was originally one storey and largely vaulted; it was probably raised by one storey in 1789, with a new roof structure and a small tower.

Landscape and Paths

The Čertova brázda runs through Vitice, a remnant of a prehistoric route consisting of hollow ways and ditches. 300 metres northwest of the Church of St. Simon and Jude, above the Bylanka stream, lies the triangular spur known as “Kozí hrádek”.

The Vitické pěšiny concept comprises a network of footpaths connecting Vitice with Dobré Pole, Lipany, Hřiby, Chotýš and Močedník. Alongside the historic buildings, this makes the connection between the settlements via footpaths a distinct component of the local landscape.

Educational Trail and Surroundings

The Lipanská mohyla educational trail begins with an introductory information panel in the municipality of Vitice. Further stops along the trail present the history of the surrounding municipalities and the local natural environment.

The hill “Na Hrádku [Vitice]” lies in the immediate vicinity of Vitice. The surroundings of Vitice also include the hill “(Ke Klučovu) [Klučov-Lstiboř]”, the hill “Velká Stráž [Vrbčany]” and the hill “Stará Kouřim [Kouřim]”. The Práče fortification lies in the wider regional surroundings of Vitice.
