Veletov: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Veletov is home to the Neo-Gothic Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, built in 1895. It was solemnly consecrated on 11 July 1897. Its uniform late-19th-century furnishings, original murals, and stained-glass windows have been preserved; a particularly noteworthy choir window depicts the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary.
Culture
The village’s rural architecture includes the late Baroque gate of Farm No. 24. It dates from 1824 and is listed as an immovable cultural monument. Farm No. 7 has a brick-built gate with a wicket gate from the first third of the 19th century; the gate and wicket gate are listed as immovable cultural monuments.
No. 37 is a fully preserved Polabian farmhouse dating from 1830 to 1840, which was restored in accordance with heritage-preservation requirements in 2015 and 2016. In the centre of Veletov, next to the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, stands an iron cross on a pedestal made of Kutná Hora limestone. It was erected in 1882 and restored in 2013.
History
The Námořní muzeum in Veletov is dedicated to the history of Czechoslovak maritime shipping. The mill known as Veletovský mlýn offers a different historical perspective: it is first mentioned in 1309. At that time, its owner, Milota of Choltice, sold the mill, together with other goods and services, to Sedlec Monastery.
The mill known as Veletovský mlýn operates a small hydroelectric power plant, which was built between 1984 and 1986. A 750-metre-long millrace leads to it, while an approximately 1,300-metre-long tailrace meanders around Veletov before flowing back into the Elbe.
Landscape
A cycle route of regional importance runs along the Elbe through the Veletov area. It is part of the Czech basic cycling network and is heavily used.
The floodplain includes Lžovické tůně, an exceptionally well-preserved, harmonious section of the Elbe floodplain with a high proportion of spatially and age-diverse hardwood floodplain forests. Exemplary plant and animal communities are developing in numerous oxbow lakes.
