Culture

The Church of Saint Wenceslas in Žabonosy is one of the oldest and most remarkable monuments in the Kolín region. The original Romanesque church, dating from the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, retains ashlar masonry reaching two-thirds of the tower’s height, the entire western part of the church, a Romanesque portal arch on the southern wall of the nave with a round-arched top and spiral band, and a window above it that has since been bricked up.

Together with the mortuary, boundary wall, cast-iron cross and stone staircase, the church was entered in the Central Register of Immovable Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic on 3 May 1958 under number 40018/2–887.

History

A fortress was built at the newly established farmstead in Žabonosy; it was first mentioned in 1584 in a debt document issued by Bohumil.

At the northern edge of the village, near the railway stop, lies the former Rozkoš water mill, house no. 15; it is not open to the public. Its milling operations ceased in 1934. The building was subsequently converted into a residential house, which still serves this purpose today. The former Rozkoš water mill was first mentioned in 1654 as part of the Žabonosy farmstead. At that time, it had three overshot water wheels supplied with water from the pond through a channel.
