Smolotely: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Smolotely combines a late-Baroque chateau in the village centre with an educational trail and sacred sites around the 545-metre-high Maková hora. Local history, landscape and pilgrimage are closely intertwined here.

Culture and History

Smolotely Chateau, a late-Baroque building, stands in the centre of the village. Between 1706 and 1732, it was converted from a Gothic fortress into a Baroque chateau. The grounds of the chateau also contain a burial site dating from the Late Bronze Age and associated with the Knovíz culture.

A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands in the village square. It was brought to Smolotely from an unspecified workshop in Prague on 16 May 1834.

The preserved brick chimney of the former steam mill in Smolotely is also part of the village's historic scenery. In the Czech Republic, it is considered one of only two architectural curiosities of its kind.

Nature

The Smolotely educational trail is 6.5 kilometres long and includes seven stops. It starts and ends in Smolotely and presents local history, botany, geology, the development of the landscape, sacred buildings and the impact of mining.

Sacred Sites

The pilgrimage church of Maková stands on the 545-metre-high Maková hora above Smolotely. C. A. Cannevalle built it between 1719 and 1722; its ceilings feature paintings of the four Evangelists by Josef Bosáček.

The Makovská pouť takes place every year on the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on 16 July or on the first Sunday afterwards. Mass is also held at Maková at 2:00 p.m. on the third Sunday of every month.

At the Makovská pouť, traditional bakers offer, among other things, homemade cakes and gingerbread.
