Nature
The Kokořín Valley Nature Reserve also includes the cadastral area of Kokořín. It comprises sandstone terrain with ravine valleys, rock steps, smaller rock cities, and weathering formations, including the Pokličky rock formations.
The nature reserve also includes extensive wetlands, including spring areas, bodies of water, the Pšovka and its tributaries, reed beds, sedge marshes, wet meadows, and alder and ash-alder floodplain forests.
In the vicinity of Kokořín lie the Kokořínské Pokličky rock formations at the confluence of Kokořínský Důl and Vojtěšský Důl. The erosion-shaped sandstone formations reach heights of up to 12 metres; the path leading to them is accessible to people of all ages.
Culture
In the centre of the municipality of Kokořín stands Kokořín Château, a Baroque chateau dating from the mid-18th century with farm buildings. The single-storey building has a red façade, corner towers, and an onion dome; the Sweerts-Špork family had it built as a country residence.
On the village square in front of Kokořín Château stands a Baroque sculptural group depicting Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, dating from 1700. Kokořín Château is not open to the public, but remains a prominent feature of the village square and an interesting destination when exploring the Kokořín Valley.
Getting Around
Kokořín Castle can be reached by car from three directions. The vehicle can be left at the final car park below the castle, after which it is less than a kilometre uphill to the castle.
The second tour of Kokořín Castle is self-guided. It includes climbing the 37.5-metre-high defensive tower, with views of the surrounding landscape, as well as visiting a historical exhibition in the cellar.
