Jirny is an important heritage conservation area with a remarkable historic town centre.

Culture

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul stands on a hill in the centre of Jirny. It is originally Gothic and dates from the 14th century; it was first mentioned in 1350. West of the church stands the statue of Saint Jude Thaddeus, dated 1860. Until 1969, it stood at the crossroads towards Horoušany and Nové Jirny. Due to repeated damage, it was moved to the grounds of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. The bell tower near the church stands on the site of an older Gothic structure, originally wooden and later made of stone, which probably dates from the mid-14th century.

History

Jirny Chateau was built between 1844 and 1847 on the remains of the Old Chateau as a two-storey building with a tower, gables and battlements. It is closed to the public. In Nové Jirny, the Chapel of the Virgin Mary was built in 1914 in the Nové Jirny woods at a place called “V zadních dubinách”.

Things to Do

The “Naučná jirenská stezka” educational trail is a circular route approximately 1.5 km long. It begins and ends in Jirny at the crossroads of K Lesu and Navrátilova streets. The trail covers the topics of monuments, flora, archaeology and fauna.

Geographically, Jirny is located on the road connecting Brandýs nad Labem–Stará Boleslav with Úvaly, and on the D11 motorway between Prague and Hradec Králové.
