Culture and History

In the centre of Horoušany, the village square features an ensemble consisting of a stone bell-tower chapel and a cast-iron cross on a stone pedestal; both elements are protected as listed monuments. The brick-built, rectangular bell-tower chapel dates from the 19th century and effectively forms the centre of the municipality.

The approximately triangular village square features a sandstone cross with an engraved depiction of Christ on a tall pedestal. It is dated 1812 and protected as an immovable cultural monument. At its upper end, the stone cross bears a Latin cross with a relief of the Crucifixion, as well as a scroll engraved with the inscription “INRI”.

Historical traces in the village include the Šámal farmstead, house number 22 on Baumanova Street near the former school. It is considered one of the most interesting surviving examples of Horoušany’s original buildings and bears a memorial plaque for Otakar Šámal, who was murdered by the Nazis in 1942. At the intersection of Baumanova and U Mlýna, a memorial stone with a plaque commemorates Břetislav Bauman and his wife Emílie. The building below is a former barn belonging to Mill Farmstead No. 11, where the couple lived and worked before and during the Second World War; Břetislav Bauman was arrested there by the Gestapo on 15 July 1942.

History reaches far beyond the village centre as well: A sandstone quarry northeast of Horoušany was authorised before mid-July 1372 for the extraction of sandstone for the construction of a Prague cathedral. Stone from the area was later also transported to important medieval buildings in Prague.

Water and Landscape

Horoušany lies at the confluence of the Horoušanský potok and Jirenský potok streams, at an elevation of 216 metres. Partially preserved wetlands and reed beds can be found along the Jirenský potok above the village.

Horoušany is arranged around a pond; the village centre lies on its right bank. North of the former manor farm is a second village square with a children’s playground, a fountain and large willows. Horoušanský rybník lies in the heart of the municipality of Horoušany in the Prague-East District, at an elevation of 216 metres, and covers 2.8 hectares.

Horoušanský rybník is currently used mainly for sport fishing. Fishing at the pond is practised on a “catch and release” basis.

Events

The annual events calendar includes several traditional one-day events. The “Hudební slavnosti obce Horoušany” takes place once a year in the first half of June at U Parku in Horoušany. In the second half of July, it is followed by the “Pivní slavnosti” in the garden of the A. Basař municipal pub.

The “Letní kino” takes place once a year in the second half of June at U Parku; another edition, titled “Letní kino (rozloučení s prázdninami)”, is held in the second half of August, also at U Parku. The “Sportovní den” is a traditional one-day event held once a year in the first half of September near the multi-purpose sports ground in Horoušany.

On Saturday, 20 October 2018, Horoušany hosted the traditional autumn hike known as “Horoušanská Gumáka”.
