Hořany: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Hořany lies on a gently sloping, elongated hill above the Elbe lowlands and has preserved its agricultural character to this day. It is precisely this combination of an elevated location and a rural setting that defines the appearance of the village.

Landscape

There are no forests in Hořany. The surrounding area is used predominantly for agriculture; most of the municipality is covered by very high-quality soils.

History and architectural heritage

Archaeological finds show that Hořany was already inhabited in 5500 BC. Neolithic finds include small stone tools and clay vessels from the Linear Pottery culture.

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary stands in the middle of the village square in the southern part of Hořany. It was built in 1896 on the site of an older bell tower. The chapel houses a painting of the Virgin Mary from 1852 by Wolfgang Siedl; its lower section depicts a view of Hořany in the mid-19th century.

House No. 11 in Hořany is a rural corner house from the 1930s with a strong Cubist influence. Its design as an urban-style house is unusual for the Czech countryside.

Hořany is a well-preserved example of a planned Central Bohemian settlement from the mid-19th century. A heritage conservation area was designated in Hořany. From the 16th to the 18th century, the Lipská long-distance road ran through Hořany, connecting Leipzig with Vienna.

In the village

A cycle route passes through Hořany. Hořany also hosts a mixed volleyball tournament; the 65th Hořany Volleyball Tournament was announced for 11 July 2026.
