The first written mention of Kralovice dates back to the end of the 11th century. The original settlement of Dolní Kralovice presumably developed from fishermen’s huts on the banks of the fish-rich Želivka River. Later, the construction of the Želivka Reservoir led to a profound turning point in the history of the town.

History

The construction of the Želivka Reservoir led to the planned demolition of the original settlements of Dolní Kralovice and Horní Kralovice; demolition began in 1968. The last passenger train from Benešov to Dolní Kralovice ran on 23 July 1974.

Culture

Dolní Kralovice is home to the Chapel of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist (“kaple Narození sv. Jana Křtitele”). It was built after the original church was flooded by the reservoir and a community hall was converted into a church.

The Želivský Kláštor Monastery is located in the vicinity of Dolní Kralovice. In the wider surrounding region are the Church of Svatý Jan, Orlík Castle Ruins, Špičák Mountain, and the Loreta Church.

Landscape

The Láb recreational pond was later created by residents in Dolní Kralovice. The Na Kopci hill [Dolní Kralovice-Libčice] is located in the immediate vicinity of Dolní Kralovice. Melechov Mountain and Ostojovka Mountain [Ledeč nad Sázavou-Souboř] are located in the vicinity of Dolní Kralovice.

Sports and Trails

The sports complex near the market square includes a football pitch with a covered grandstand, as well as a multi-purpose field with artificial turf, used mainly for tennis and also for volleyball, small-sided football, and nohejbal. The local hiking routes feature moderate climbs and descents and are therefore among the less demanding routes.

Other places at the same higher administrative level are Pravonín, Křivsoudov, Stranný, Chotýšany, Tichonice, Libohošť, Lštění and Kamberk.
