Višnjan is home to Zvjezdarnica Višnjan, a public observatory that conducts scientific research into asteroids, comets and meteoroids.

When weather conditions are suitable, Astro Night includes observing visible celestial bodies with an amateur telescope on the meadow outside the observatory. The event ends with a laser-guided tour of the spring and summer constellations and combines an astronomy lecture with a tour of the observatory and telescope dome.

Culture

The Church of St Mary Magdalene in Višnjan is a neo-Gothic chapel that was moved from the former cemetery near Saline to its present location in 1884. A single gravestone from the former Church of St Mary Magdalene is set into the stone steps of the present-day chapel.

The historic centre of Višnjan can be explored on foot from Antun Korlević Park: the route passes through the 15th-century Gothic Church of St Anthony and through a Venetian lion gate dating from 1517 to the old town square, with sections of the 13th- and 14th-century walls, a 27-metre-high bell tower, an 18th-century loggia, a cistern and the 19th-century Church of Saints Quiricus and Julietta.

The Church of St Anthony stands on the road from Višnjan to Poreč; it is a Gothic stone building with a bell gable. It contains legends from the life of the saint and parts of a Christological cycle.

The former St Roch Chapel stood on Višnjan’s town square until it was demolished in 1914. Its church furnishings were transferred to a new neo-Romanesque chapel in Saline, which was completed in 1923.

Nature

The 7.7-kilometre-long Sovina staza begins in the pine grove at Višnjan Cemetery, leads along forest and gravel paths to Tićan and then returns to Višnjan. Along the way, it passes a former quarry, lavender plantations and old oak trees. From the Vena viewpoint on Sovina staza, there are views across olive groves, vineyards and the sea.

The Staza venecijanskog lava hiking route runs through historic Višnjan and the old village of Barat before returning to Višnjan.

The viewpoint in the old town looks across green fields and vineyards towards the sea in the direction of Poreč and Tar.

Zvjezdana staza begins in the centre of Višnjan and leads through the town, along forest paths, through vineyards and the surrounding villages to Tićan before returning to Višnjan. Zvjezdana staza is considered a gentle route for families and holidaymakers seeking relaxation.

Gastronomy

Višnjan’s visitor offerings include local wines and sparkling wines, visits to wine cellars and tasting rooms, as well as products from family farms such as olive oil, honey and other Istrian delicacies.

Surroundings

In the nearby area, Vicinim works with the grape varieties Istarska malvazija, Teran, Sauvignon, Merlot and Muškat žuti. Other products from Vicinim there include olive oil from its own production.

Nearby, the Tičan Observatory Complex is a destination for stargazing, science and school trips. Astrofest is traditionally held at the summer solstice in Tičan near Višnjan.
