Otero County combines unusual landscapes with space travel history, museums, and nature experiences. The White Sands National Park is particularly striking. Special access conditions apply to the McGregor Range in Otero County: Public access is only possible with a Recreational Access Permit from the Fort Bliss Training Complex. The area may be closed to the public during military exercises. Alamogordo: Space Travel and Regional History

Alamogordo, the county seat of Otero County, brings together several cultural points of interest. Most visits to the New Mexico Museum of Space History take the form of self-guided tours. The International Space Hall of Fame was founded in 1976 to honor the achievements of people who advanced knowledge of the universe and the ability to explore space.

The history of the Tularosa Basin is also preserved and presented in Alamogordo. The Tularosa Basin Historical Society & Museum works in archival preservation, education, and public programs. Its collection includes more than 10,000 historical photographs, regional newspapers dating from the late 19th century onward, records of pioneer families, and documents from the early development years of the Tularosa Basin. The New Mexico Space Museum offers another connection to the city’s space travel history. Alameda Park Zoo provides educational activities that connect visitors of all ages with animals and nature. The zoo was founded at its current location in 1898 as a deer park.
