Alamogordo combines space travel history, engaging museums and the distinctive landscape of White Sands National Park. This makes the town ideal for a trip that combines cultural discoveries, outdoor activities and family-friendly experiences. When looking for a vacation rental or holiday home in Alamogordo, it is therefore worth deciding on your personal focus: Should museums and local history be the main priorities, or would you prefer to plan varied days between parks, wildlife and desert landscapes?

Discover Space Travel History

The New Mexico Museum of Space History collects, preserves and interprets significant artifacts relating to the history of space travel. At the museum, you can see, among other things, a genuine piece of lunar rock as well as replicas of Sputnik and Explorer. The International Space Hall of Fame is also part of the facility. It was established in 1976 to honor achievements in space exploration and is part of the museum in Alamogordo.

For visitors with different interests, the museum offers several ways to explore the subject. The New Horizons Dome Theater and Planetarium is also located at the New Mexico Museum of Space History. This allows you to include exhibits, space travel history and a planetarium presentation in the same cultural day without having to change locations.

Alameda Park, Zoo and Model Trains

Alameda Park is an 18-hectare park on Alamogordo’s main thoroughfare, White Sands Boulevard. It features a 9-hole disc golf course suitable for players of all experience levels. The park can also be combined with other family-oriented attractions. Alameda Park Zoo is home to nearly 300 animals representing 90 species. The zoo includes an education center, a picnic area, a playground and a gift shop.

A visit to the zoo can be enhanced further with access to a breeding facility for the Mexican wolf. Guided tours, docent programs and talks complement the offerings. At the Toy Train Depot, a miniature railway departs every 30 minutes and circles Alameda Park. The depot also contains hundreds of scale models of locomotives as well as passenger and freight cars, the world’s smallest working scale-model train, and a 1,000-square-foot HO-scale layout depicting Alamogordo in the 1940s.

Desert, Trails and Distinctive Local History

White Sands National Park is 15 minutes from Alamogordo. Its desert landscape of white gypsum sand dunes offers opportunities for hiking, cycling, camping, picnicking and sledding. Sunset walks and full-moon events are also available. Travelers who like to plan a varied itinerary can combine a museum day in Alamogordo with time spent in this extraordinary landscape.

The Alamogordo area also has more than 100 well-maintained trails for hiking, riding pack or saddle animals, mountain biking, and motorcycle and ATV riding. The selection therefore ranges from peaceful nature experiences to more active pursuits. Which accommodation is right for you depends primarily on whether you want to combine these outdoor days with museum visits, wildlife viewing or shared experiences in the park.

The Tularosa Basin Museum of History presents the local history of Alamogordo, Tularosa, Ruidoso and surrounding communities. The site of the La Luz Pottery Factory provides another historical highlight: It can be visited on Saturday mornings through the museum by prior reservation. This option should therefore be planned as a separate itinerary item.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Preferred Travel Pace

Alamogordo offers many different reasons to stay: space travel and technology, local history, animals, park attractions, model trains and the landscape of White Sands National Park. Travelers who want to explore several cultural attractions will plan their days differently from those primarily seeking trails, dunes and outdoor activities. A vacation rental or holiday home in Alamogordo is therefore the right type of accommodation to search for if you want to get to know the town itself and its diverse attractions more closely.
