At Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park, you can see more than 40 animal species and hundreds of plant species from the Chihuahuan Desert. The loop trail is 1.3 miles long and has an elevation difference of 70 feet. Seasonal interpretive programs are aimed at the whole family. The ridge offers views of the Pecos River Valley and Carlsbad. The 0.9-mile Ocotillo Hills Nature Trail runs directly adjacent to the park.
For longer hiking plans, there is the Guadalupe Ridge Trail. The route is 100 miles or 161 kilometers long and passes through two states, two national parks, and one national forest; more than 20 miles run through Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Anyone choosing the Yucca Canyon Trail should take into account its challenging character and length of 7.7 miles or 12.4 kilometers. The trail leads to a viewpoint overlooking Big Canyon and the basin. A high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended for the gravel road to Yucca Canyon.
Rattlesnake Springs shows another side of the region: The area is a rare wooded desert riparian zone and has been designated an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society. The Pecos River Recreation Area in central Carlsbad offers boating, water skiing, and fishing on Lake Carlsbad. It also has kayak and pedal boat rentals as well as boat tours. On the banks of the Pecos River, Carlsbad Water Park features two fast slides, the 50-foot-high “Big Blue” slide, a lazy river, and a ground-level children's play area.
