The eastern boundary of Mora County is formed by the steep-walled Canadian River Canyon. In the western part of the county lies the Pecos Wilderness, which offers access to remote fishing in mountain streams. The area also offers the history of the village of Mora, a water-powered grist mill, and seasonal experiences. Its landscapes, architecture, and activities offer different perspectives for planning a trip.

Landscape and Activities

The canyon forms the eastern county boundary; the Pecos Wilderness lies in the western part of Mora County. It offers access to remote fishing in mountain streams. Coyote Creek State Park is nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains along a meandering stream and is well suited to fly-fishing. The fishing opportunities are distinct: remote fishing in mountain streams and fly-fishing along a meandering stream in a state park. The Eusebio Romero Trail is three-quarters of a mile long. Check trail conditions locally.

Since 1999, the Mora National Fish Hatchery has raised and stocked Gila trout.

Architecture and History

In the village of Mora, by far the majority of buildings date from the period of its agricultural importance, from 1850 to 1920. During the valley’s agricultural boom in those same years, the village flourished as the region’s economic, religious, educational, and governmental center. The buildings and its role as a regional center thus tell two sides of the same story.

The Cleveland Roller Mill is a three-story, adobe-built, water-powered grist mill that has been converted into a local history museum. Its original machinery has been preserved and restored enough to be operated for demonstration purposes only. This brings milling technology and local history together in one building. The mill is on Highway 518, two miles north of Mora; check road conditions before setting out.

Fort Union National Monument preserves the adobe-clad ruins of the region’s largest 19th-century military fort. From 1851 to 1891, Fort Union was a defining force in the New Mexico Territory and throughout the Southwest. The Santa Fe Trail runs through Fort Union.

Traditions and Seasonal Experiences

Wagon Mound is a National Historic Landmark. The town’s family traditions include the annual Bean Day Festival. If you’re planning to attend, check the current dates separately. During the summer months, visitors can pick raspberries to take home; check before your trip whether picking will be possible during your visit.

Choose a Vacation Rental Based on Your Travel Interests

When searching for a vacation rental, you can plan your trip around the experiences that interest you most. History and architecture are one option, while landscapes and fishing are another; the festival and raspberry picking also require checking specific dates. Decide which of these themes you want to shape your days before choosing your accommodation. This way, you can tailor your search to your travel plans.
