Gage County combines impressive history with prairie, lakes, trails and a variety of experiences. The region is particularly diverse in and around Beatrice: families can discover a StoryWalk®, water activities and parks, while those interested in culture can explore historic buildings, museums and the history of the Great Plains. When choosing your vacation rental, it is therefore worth deciding on your preferred travel style first.

History in the Landscape and Buildings

Homestead National Historical Park combines natural and cultural themes. The park includes the Heritage Center, the Palmer-Epard Cabin, the Education Center, the Freeman School and a 100-acre tallgrass prairie. Along Cub Creek, there are also 100 acres of restored tallgrass prairie and oak woodland. This makes it possible to combine a visit featuring both scenic impressions and historic sites.

The Palmer-Epard Cabin was built in 1867 by George W. Palmer from various hardwoods. As an interpretive feature, it provides insight into life on the frontier after the Civil War. Outside the summer afternoon hours, the Freeman School can be opened for visitors upon request by a park ranger. Take this request into account when planning your day.

The Gage County Historical Society and Museum also tells the story of the region. It is located in the historic center of Beatrice in the Burlington Passenger Depot, built in 1906, and presents exhibitions on the history of Gage County from its founding to the present day. The Filley Stone Barn was built in 1874 and is considered Nebraska's largest limestone barn complex built into a hillside.

Trails, Lake and Historic Route

For days in nature, Rockford Lake State Recreation Area offers a 150-acre lake and approximately 300 acres of land. A 1-mile hiking trail complements the area. Those who prefer longer distances will find more than 10 miles of city trails in Beatrice for cycling, walking or jogging. Outside the city limits, the city maintains approximately 18 miles of trails, including more than 15 miles between Beatrice and Cortland and 3 miles east of Beatrice.

The Beatrice trail network features signs, mile markers, restrooms, water stations, bicycle repair stations, picnic shelters and seating areas. The Chief Standing Bear Trail runs from Beatrice through Holmesville, Blue Springs, Wymore and Barneston before connecting with the Kansas Blue River Rail Trail at the Nebraska-Kansas border. It follows a former Union Pacific route and corresponds to the route along which Chief Standing Bear and the Ponca Tribe were relocated from Niobrara, Nebraska, to Oklahoma in 1877.

Experiences for Different Age Groups

The Beatrice StoryWalk® presents a book page by page along a trail. A total of 20 posts each display one book page; the StoryWalk® is located on the Homestead Trail on 2nd Street between Ella Street and Grant Street. Big Blue Water Park features a 9,000-square-foot pool with zero-depth entry, a children's pool with fountains and toys, a 124-foot looping water slide and an 8-foot-wide river slide.

Chautauqua Park expands the selection with playgrounds, picnic areas, horseshoe pits, baseball and softball fields, fishing in the river, and a hiking and cycling trail. For culture-focused days, the Nebraska Baseball Hall of Fame offers memorabilia, artifacts, photographs and items dating from 1916 onward. The collection can be visited by appointment. Yesterday's Lady houses a museum of historic clothing in the renovated Schmuck Building from 1887.

Welsh Heritage and Travel Planning

In Wymore, the Great Plains Welsh Heritage Centre is primarily dedicated to the heritage of Welsh settlers in the Great Plains. The Centre includes exhibition areas, a library, an archive, a digital theater for Welsh films and a genealogical database of Welsh-American families. It is open on summer Sunday afternoons and by appointment and welcomes group tours. The historic District 81 Pleasant View Schoolhouse is a fully furnished one-room schoolhouse museum dating from around 1900.

If museums, historic buildings and attractions in Beatrice are your main priorities, you can consider Beatrice as a location when searching for a vacation rental. For a more nature-focused stay, on the other hand, you should include selected destinations such as Rockford Lake State Recreation Area or Homestead National Historical Park in your location planning at an early stage.
