Red Willow: Culture, History and Landscape
Accommodation in Red Willow
Red Willow combines an expansive lake landscape with engaging regional history and special places in McCook and the surrounding area. The Red Willow Reservoir State Recreation Area encompasses 4,320 acres of land around a 1,628-acre lake. Those who would like to combine nature, culture and walks when planning their trip will find different focal points here for varied days. When choosing your vacation rental, you can therefore first decide whether you would like to focus your stay more on the landscape, historical discoveries or events.
Cultural History in and Around McCook
A central point of contact for the region’s history is the Museum of the High Plains. It was founded on February 6, 1963, in the home of Mrs. John (Eleanor) T. Harris to preserve the history of Red Willow County and southwestern Nebraska. The exhibitions cover, among other things, an air force base from World War II and a German prisoner-of-war camp. The museum also offers a scavenger hunt through its buildings and exhibitions; the current task is available at the reception desk. For families who enjoy taking a closer look together during a museum visit, this is a practical way to explore the rooms actively.
The McCook Heritage Square Walking Tour also places a clear emphasis on history. It extends across more than 10 city blocks and showcases various architectural styles from the late 19th century through the early to mid-20th century. In addition, the Harvey P. Sutton House in McCook, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Red Willow County Courthouse, built in 1926–1927, represent different chapters in architectural history. In Barnett Park, a decommissioned M60A1 main battle tank also commemorates military history; it was donated for display by the Army National Guard.
Trails, Parks and Special Places
For a quieter day, the 1.5-mile Kelley Creek Walking Trail follows the creek toward East H Street. In Norris Park, a historic bandshell serves as a focal point for festivals and celebrations. The two sand pits in Barnett Park are stocked with various fish species every year. These different park and landscape features give you the opportunity to combine cultural sightseeing with a walk outdoors or time by the water, without limiting your travel day to just one type of experience.
The Kiplinger Arena is part of the Red Willow County Fairgrounds. It has hosted equestrian, rodeo and agricultural events, Team Penning, roping and barrel racing; there have also been exhibitions of recreational vehicles, farm machinery and livestock. At the Danbury Depot Museum, built in 1888, private visits or guided tours can be arranged by message through Facebook. Depending on your interests, this allows you to give different weight to architecture, the history of regional use and events.
Choosing a Suitable Base for Your Trip
If historical sites are to be the focus, consider planning a trip centered on the museum, Heritage Square Walking Tour, courthouse and Harvey P. Sutton House. Those who would rather include landscapes and trails can take the reservoir, Kelley Creek Walking Trail and park areas into account. For events around the fairgrounds area, the Kiplinger Arena is another distinct point of reference. McCook Ben Nelson Regional Airport has two paved and lighted runways as well as a 1,350-foot grass runway and is currently served by Denver Air. For other destinations in the portal, you can visit Bartley and Mccook.
