Buffalo County combines impressive nature observation with history, art and a variety of experiences for families. Highlights include Sandhill Cranes along the Platte River, historic trails and buildings, museums with a regional focus, and activities where children can learn through play. When choosing your vacation rental, it is therefore worthwhile to first determine the focus of your trip: nature observation in spring, culture and history, or active days with cycling, kayaking and walks.

Sandhill Cranes and Trails along the Platte River

Rowe Sanctuary is located at the center of an important stopover area for hundreds of thousands of Sandhill Cranes migrating in spring. The Iain Nicolson Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary welcomes visitors year-round; there, you can explore exhibits, a gift shop, programs and trails. Guided tours are also offered daily at sunrise and sunset. During these tours, visitors can see Sandhill Cranes from observation stations along the Platte River. If you would like to include this nature experience in your plans, you should pay particular attention to the light at the beginning or end of the day when planning your trip.

Another seasonal attraction can be found at Windmill State Recreation Area: every year from March 1 through April 15, an observation stand for Sandhill Cranes is available there. The area’s oldest windmill is a Standard windmill dating from 1880. It was used to pump water for steam locomotives in Fleming, Colorado. For active days, there is also the 13.1-mile paved hiking and biking trail from Cottonmill Park to Fort Kearny, as well as the Fort Kearny Hike-Bike Trail, which crosses both channels of the Platte River. The Kearney Water Trail adds a 2.3-mile kayaking route through Kearney to this selection.

History, Art and Regional Identity

Fort Kearny was established in 1848 as the first fort built to protect travelers on the Oregon-California Trail. Fort Kearny includes reconstructed buildings such as a fortified camp area, a parade ground, a powder magazine, and a blacksmith and carpenter shop. The Mormon Trail and the Union Pacific Railroad are also among the two transportation routes that contributed to the area’s early development.

The G.W. Frank Museum of History and Culture is located in the oldest building on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus: an 1889 Richardsonian Romanesque mansion that is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Museum of Nebraska Art has a permanent collection of more than 5,000 works of Nebraska visual art and presents changing exhibitions featuring art and artists from Nebraska. At the Trails and Rails Museum, tours take visitors through historic buildings such as the Loup River Freighters Hotel, District No. 1 School House, a carriage house and a log cabin, as well as a fully operational blacksmith shop.

Experiences for Different Types of Travel Days

The Archway spans Interstate 80 at Exit 275 in Kearney and offers an immersive, self-guided journey through 180 years for the whole family. At the Kearney Area Children’s Museum, interactive experiences encourage children to play, explore and discover. In Yanney Heritage Park, the 80-foot-tall Gottschalk Tower overlooks the lake, amphitheater, splash pads, playgrounds, marina and flower gardens. This makes it possible to combine cultural sightseeing and family-oriented activities with nature and exercise.

Additional thematic highlights include the American Automobile Experience, with more than 125 American and foreign classic automobiles as well as memorabilia, and the Nebraska Firefighters Museum & Education Center. It is dedicated to preserving Nebraska’s firefighting heritage, provides information about fire prevention and fire safety, and commemorates Nebraska’s firefighters. Every October, selected fire vehicles in the exhibition are replaced. The Gateway Farm Expo is Nebraska’s longest-running agricultural trade show and attracts thousands of visitors to Kearney each year.
