Jefferson County combines impressive traces of American settlement and transportation history with prairie landscapes, lakes and nature trails. The Rock Creek Station, a historic station for travelers on the Oregon Trail and the California Trail, is the main attraction. Those looking for a mix of history, landscape and varied excursions for their holiday will find many different points of interest here to consider when choosing a holiday rental or holiday home.

Prairie, Creek Bottomlands and Historic Trails

Rock Creek Station State Historical Park covers 350 acres. The area is characterized by prairie hilltops, tree-lined creek bottomlands and rugged ravines. This landscape can be explored on foot along six miles of hiking and nature trails; the trails also offer opportunities for birdwatching. The park grounds are open year-round from 8 a.m. until sunset. This provides a clear time frame for planning your day without limiting you to a single attraction.

History Made Visible at Specific Places

At Rock Creek Station, you can explore reconstructed ranch cabins, a bunkhouse, a barn, a post office and a toll bridge. The station was established in 1857 on the Oregon-California Trail as a stagecoach and Pony Express station, as well as a stopping place for travelers. During the summer, regional interpreters regularly give living-history demonstrations there. Rock Creek Station State Historical Park is therefore a destination for visitors who want to experience historical processes not only in exhibitions, but also at reconstructed buildings and within the surrounding landscape.

There are also numerous cultural points of interest outside the station. Fairbury City Museum displays historical objects relating to early life and the challenges of pioneer life in Jefferson County. At the Rock Island Railroad Museum, you can see Rock Island Railroad memorabilia and an HO-scale model railway; the museum is located in one of only two surviving Rock Island railway stations in the state of Nebraska. The Diller Bank Building Museum is housed in a building constructed in 1883 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The historical picture is complemented by the W.C. Smith House and Lime Kiln, with exhibitions on the lime industry and historical furnishings.

Water, Nature and Trails for Different Day Plans

If you would like to alternate between a cultural program and time outdoors, Alexandria State Recreation Area offers a different focus. The area comprises 55 acres of land and two lakes with a combined water surface of 46 acres. It offers fishing opportunities, picnic shelters and campsites. At Crystal Springs Park and Campground, visitors can fish, observe wildlife and camp. Six designated Wildlife Management Areas cover a combined area of more than 2,800 acres in Jefferson County. They include the 706-acre Rock Glen Wildlife Management Area and the 259-acre Flathead Wildlife Management Area, which has a tree-lined trail for hiking.

An excursion in and around Fairbury can also combine various interests. The Little Blue River Trail crosses the old Rock Island railway bridge and passes through the Flathead Wildlife Management Area. Fairbury City Park has a well-used walking path, while McNish Park offers a nine-hole disc golf course among old trees, fountains, rocks and waterfalls. Frontier Fun Park recreates a pioneer Wild West town as a fantasy playground built entirely from wood.

Travel Season and the Right Location

Several events add seasonal highlights: Rock Creek Trail Days take place every year on the first full weekend in June, and the National Pony Express Re-Ride takes place every June. In Steele City, living-history demonstrations are held every summer. From April through September, the Jefferson County Speedway hosts mini-sprint, truck and three-quarter midget races on a banked oval dirt track. The Jefferson County Fair is held every July at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

When searching for accommodation, you can therefore focus on the type of holiday you want. A location in Fairbury is a good fit if museums, historic buildings, walking trails and city parks are the priority. For days centered on trail history, nature trails and birdwatching, the area around Rock Creek Station State Historical Park is particularly suitable. Those planning to enjoy water, fishing or wildlife observation can give greater weight to the recreation areas and Wildlife Management Areas. Local transportation in Jefferson County also includes a Handi-Bus service. This allows you to choose your holiday rental based on the experiences you actually want to discover during your holiday.
