Lancaster – Nature, Culture and Special Travel Experiences
Accommodation in Lancaster
Anyone choosing Lancaster for a trip can enjoy a varied stay combining culture, nature and special experiences. Museums tell stories of Asian cultures, roller skating, quilts and settlers of German descent. An additional family-oriented experience is Lincoln Children's Zoo: It is home to more than 40 endangered animals, including a Sumatran tiger and a Matschie's tree-kangaroo. There are also expansive landscapes, nature trails, gardens and paths for non-motorized activities. When choosing your holiday apartment, it is therefore worth first deciding on your preferred focus: Should the trip primarily revolve around exhibitions and local history, days in nature or a combination of both?
Discover Culture through Unusual Themes
The Lentz Center for Asian Culture opened in 1986. It honors the diverse cultures of Asia and aims to promote understanding between East and West. The National Museum of Roller Skating offers a very different approach to cultural history; it opened in 1982 and presents the achievements and rich history of roller skating.
The International Quilt Museum houses the world's largest publicly accessible quilt collection. The Germans from Russia Museum focuses on the history, cultural heritage and genealogy of settlers of German descent in the Russian Empire and their descendants. Morrill Hall is also part of the cultural landscape: Since 1927, the institution has welcomed curious visitors on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln campus. Free guided tours are available at the Nebraska State Capitol. They begin at the north entrance on the second floor.
Parks, Trails and Landscapes
Wilderness Park extends across the floodplain of Salt Creek. The Red and Green Trails are open to all non-motorized users, including pedestrians, cyclists, horseback riders and cross-country skiers. This allows you to plan the day around your preferred activity without reducing the park to just one type of experience. Each year, the Sunken Gardens feature a new floral arrangement designed by the Garden Artists.
Pioneers Park Nature Center covers 668 acres of tallgrass prairie, woodland, wetlands and a tributary of Salt Creek. More than ten miles of hiking trails lead through these diverse habitats. Along the trails are exhibits featuring non-releasable birds of prey and a small herd of bison. Pioneers Park is also home to the Pinewood Bowl Theater. The park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
At the Saline Wetlands, a 3/4-mile nature trail offers views of restored salt marshes and prairie. A pavilion provides several vantage points over this landscape. Travelers who want to combine nature observation, exercise and shorter explorations when planning their trip can consciously weigh these different options against the museums and the city program.
Cityscape, Market and Arrival
The Historic Haymarket is characterized by charming brick streets and historic buildings. At the Haymarket Farmers’ Market, Nebraska farmers can sell fresh, high-quality produce directly to consumers. This complements the cultural attractions with an insight into regional products and the local character of the neighborhood.
For arriving by car, Interstate 80 runs west from Omaha through Nebraska toward the Wyoming border. Lincoln Airport offers flights to major international airports. Information about parks and recreational opportunities in Lancaster County is available from the responsible parks and recreation department. This allows you to choose your accommodation according to your planned mix of culture, landscapes, a market visit and travel arrangements.
