Discover Fairbury: Railroads, History, and Nature
Accommodation in Fairbury
Fairbury, Nebraska, combines local history with trails through parks and nearby landscapes. In town, a museum, a former depot, and a historic commercial district tell different stories about the area. Outdoors, walking and nature trails offer a very different experience. When planning your stay, you can choose between exploring the town, outdoor activities, and special events.
Museums and Railroad History
The Fairbury City Museum preserves, displays, and interprets the history of Fairbury and Jefferson County. Its exhibits include donated historical objects that offer a glimpse into life in the county in earlier times. The museum is open year-round; special tours can be arranged by appointment. This makes it easy to include a visit in your travel plans even if you don’t want to be tied to a seasonal exhibition schedule.
Fairbury’s depot is now a museum, too: the Rock Island Railroad Museum houses railroad artifacts and memorabilia. At the Fairbury Rock Island Railroad Depot, visitors can see the restored entrance hall, ticket office, waiting rooms and baggage areas, as well as a model railroad. These different spaces bring the former function of a railroad station to life, so the visit isn’t limited to individual exhibits. Railroad enthusiasts will find a different way to explore local history here than at the City Museum.
A Historic District with Brick Streets
The Fairbury Commercial Historic District spans approximately ten city blocks and includes 117 properties. It is centered on the Jefferson County Courthouse in Courthouse Square. Nearly every street in the district is paved with bricks laid around 1916. As you explore, you can take in the district’s different features: the square and courthouse, as well as the streets that give the district its character. Its approximate size and number of properties offer a sense of the scale of this historic area.
Parks, Play, and Recreation
Fairbury’s City Park has a popular walking trail. The Little Blue River Trail offers another option for walkers: you can use it to reach Fairbury City Park or cross the old Rock Island Railroad Bridge through the Flathead Wildlife Management Area. Whether you prefer shorter outings in the city park or longer outdoor routes, there are different ways to get moving.
Frontier Fun Park is a playground made entirely of wood and designed to resemble a frontier town in the Wild West. The Fairbury Softball Complex features four lit playing fields and two adjacent practice fields. Fairbury Disc Golf Course, meanwhile, has nine holes among old trees, fountains, rocks, and waterfalls. These attractions are quite different: from a themed playground to sports fields and a disc golf course with varied features along the holes.
Nature and History Nearby
Just outside town is Crystal Springs Park and Campground, where visitors can fish, watch wildlife, and camp. Nearby, Rock Creek Station State Historical Park encompasses 350 acres of prairie uplands, tree-lined creek bottoms, and rugged ravines. Its hiking and nature trails total six miles. The landscape offers a contrast to Fairbury’s streets and museum spaces: here, the focus is on varied terrain and outdoor trails rather than town history.
Rock Creek Station is also connected with the history of travel. It was a stagecoach and Pony Express station, as well as a stop for travelers on the Oregon Trail and California Trail. If you’re interested in this past, you can include its historical significance alongside the nearby landscapes and trails in your travel plans.
Events to Help Plan Your Trip
Rock Island Rail Days takes place on the first weekend in June. Every year, during the holiday around July 4, thousands of visitors come to Fairbury City Park to shop from hundreds of vendors. If you’re considering visiting during either event, you can plan your travel dates around it. For a stay without these events, the museums, historic district, and range of outdoor activities offer other themes to explore.
When choosing a vacation rental in Fairbury, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you mainly like to explore museums and the historic district, or spend more time on walking trails, nature paths, and outdoor activities? The annual events may also be an important factor in your planning. That way, you can tailor your visit to Fairbury to the interests that matter most to your group.
