Brown County combines waterscapes, nature experiences, and historical insights into a destination with a variety of attractions. Around its creeks and lakes, you will find opportunities for hiking, fishing, wildlife watching, and boating. At the same time, a museum, historic buildings, and a resort dating from 1912 tell the story of the region’s past. When looking for a vacation rental or vacation home, it is therefore worthwhile to first organize the excursions you want to take: Should your stay focus primarily on the waterways, the landscape, or the historic sites?

Long Pine Creek and Trails Through the Landscape

A notable starting point is Long Pine State Recreation Area. The 153-acre area extends on both sides of Long Pine Creek and features a scenic one-mile hiking trail. This allows you to combine a stay with a manageable walking distance and the character of a creek area without having to commit the entire day to a single activity.

A distinctive structure on Long Pine Creek is the Cowboy Trail bridge near Long Pine. It is 595 feet long, 145 feet high, and spans the creek. The difference in scale between the short hiking trail in Long Pine State Recreation Area and this highly visible structure gives the landscape two very different perspectives. In winter, fly-fishing for trout is also possible on Long Pine Creek near Pine Glen WMA.

Lakes for Fishing, Boating, and Relaxed Days

Keller Park State Recreation Area offers fishing opportunities in five small lakes. Visitors can also observe songbirds, white-tailed deer, mule deer, ducks, hawks, and eagles. The park has hiking opportunities, and a rustic footbridge crosses Bone Creek. From Ainsworth, Keller Park State Recreation Area is located on U.S. Highway 7, 5 miles east and 9 miles north of U.S. Highway 20. This specific location information helps you place the park when putting together your daily destinations.

Plum Creek Valley WMA is stocked with rainbow trout twice a year. It offers primitive camping and a pedestrian access point to Plum Creek. Electric motors or boats without motors are permitted on Tower Lake. Access to Tower Lake is restricted to daytime hours; there is also a basic boat ramp. Those looking for accommodation can take these different rules and types of use into account when planning their desired excursions.

Cozad Lake covers 80 acres and is also known as South Pine WMA. Boats are subject to a maximum speed of 5 mph with no wake. The lake has an improved boat ramp and offers primitive camping. Public fishing is permitted at Clear Lake. At the eastern end, there is off-road access for boats and ice fishing. Brown County therefore offers a variety of water destinations, whose specific conditions should be included in each day’s planning.

Historic Sites and Insights

Brown County also offers opportunities for a day focused on culture and history away from the lakes. The Sellors Barton Museum in Ainsworth was dedicated in 1936. The Dixon House of the Brown County Historical Society features historical exhibits. The society also maintains a county school in its original setting, which likewise features exhibits. Hidden Paradise Resort opened in 1912 and adds another chapter of regional history to these historical points of interest.

Choose Your Accommodation According to Your Travel Plans

When choosing a vacation rental in Brown County, your personal priorities can be decisive. If you want to plan visits to several lakes and fishing spots, you should compare the selected water destinations before booking. For a stay featuring wildlife observation, hiking, and historic sightseeing, a different combination of daily destinations may make sense. A vacation rental or vacation home should therefore not be selected based on a blanket recommendation, but according to the location that suits your specific activities. For this reason, check the individual destinations, access roads, and applicable conditions of use before finalizing your accommodation.
