Nicollet County combines waterside landscapes with historic sites, walking trails and special destinations. Those planning a trip with children or several generations can put together a variety of day-trip ideas here: discover nature, learn about cultural history, use trails on foot or by bike, and experience regional events. When choosing a vacation rental or vacation home, it helps to consider the desired mix during the planning stage.

Trails, Water and Open Landscapes

7 Mile Creek Park has multi-use trails and a boat launch with access to the Minnesota River. This allows you to add exercise and water-based activities to your stay without limiting the trip to a single activity. Traverse des Sioux is located along the lower Minnesota River. The Treaty of Traverse des Sioux between the U.S. government and the Dakota was signed at this site in 1851. The location therefore connects a riverside landscape with an important chapter of history.

The arboretum at Gustavus Adolphus College also offers various ways to spend time outdoors. More than 2.5 miles of trails are available for walking, biking and running. The grounds include coniferous forest, tallgrass prairie, deciduous forest, formal gardens and hardy trees from around the world. The outdoor grounds are open year-round during daylight hours. Admission is free, and donations are welcome. Several exhibits in the Melva Lind Interpretive Center add a cultural focus to the visit.

Historic Sites with Their Own Atmosphere

The E. St. Julien Cox House was built in 1871 by Eugene St. Julien Cox and his wife, Mariah (Mayhew) Cox. The building is considered an outstanding example of a Carpenter Gothic–Italianate cottage. In 1971, it reopened to the public as a historic house museum. Those interested in architecture and local history will find a tangible connection to the area's past here.

Harkin Store is an authentic general store from the 1870s. Visitors can take a self-guided tour outside the store and the attached residence. This makes the destination suitable for a quiet exploration at your own pace. In McGill Park, a trail runs along Church Street on the original rail bed of the former Chicago and Northwestern Railway.

Riverfront Trails, Forest and Wildlife

Riverside Park has nearly 2,000 feet of shoreline along the Minnesota River and its associated backwater areas. Several miles of trails can be used for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. The park therefore offers different forms of activity that you can consider depending on your travel plans and the season. McGill Park Nature Area complements this selection with walking trails through an urban forest.

Minnemishinona Falls is a scenic overlook on Judson Bottom Road and is open from sunrise to sunset. Swan Lake in Nicollet County is also interesting for observing nature. The lake remains a hotspot for birdlife; it includes nearby shallow wetlands and marshes of the Swan Lake State Wildlife Management Area.
