In Rock, striking quartzite cliffs meet diverse prairie and a rich cultural heritage. The landscape and trails around Luverne offer opportunities for active pursuits, while museums, historic buildings and performances provide a different perspective on the region. You can plan your trip around whether you’d rather spend most of your time outdoors or include culture and history.

Prairie, Rock and Trails

Blue Mounds State Park protects steep quartzite cliffs and more than 1,500 acres of diverse prairie. The prairie landscape is also crisscrossed by 13 miles of easy to moderate hiking trails. The terrain provides a setting for hikes, while the cliffs give the park a distinctive landscape. Climbing is also possible: the park has numerous established routes with varying levels of difficulty.

Several trails offer different distances and routes. The Blue Mounds Hiking and Biking Trail runs 6.0 miles from Main Street in Luverne to Blue Mounds State Park. The 7.4-mile Luverne Loop runs around the outskirts of Luverne. The 1.95-mile Ashby Trail crosses the Rock River, passes through Luverne City Park, and follows Rock River Road east out of Luverne. When planning, you can compare not only trail lengths but also consider whether you’d prefer a trail with the stated endpoints, a loop around the outskirts, or a route through and out of Luverne.

The season can also shape your activities: during the winter months, Blue Mound Ice Arena hosts games for the Luverne Cardinals, the Blue Mound Figure Skaters, public skating, figure skating lessons and other special activities. The program may change; check current information if you’d like to plan your visit around it.

Luverne and the Region’s History

The Herreid Military Museum displays the World War II uniform of P-47 pilot Quentin Aanenson, along with his flight jacket, helmet, goggles and boots. The museum is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Rock County History Center presents exhibits about early life in Rock County and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check opening hours before your visit.

Opened in 1915, Luverne’s Palace Theatre has 450 seats. Throughout its history, it brought films, vaudeville and touring ensembles to the region; today, the Historic Palace Theatre hosts a variety of musical performances throughout the year. Here, a long theatrical history meets a current music program.

The One Room School House at the Rock County Fairgrounds is a replica of the original District 1 school house. The Ordung Building displays agricultural tools and machinery used by early settlers; it also houses two early fire engines from Luverne Fire Apparatus.

The Rock County Veterans Memorial honors soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen from Rock County who lost their lives in military service. The Brandenburg Gallery at Rock County Courthouse Square in Luverne offers a different cultural perspective, featuring award-winning nature photography by Jim Brandenburg.
