Koochiching: Lakes, Nature and Special Discoveries
Accommodation in Koochiching
Between Lakes, Rivers and Forest
Koochiching is a destination for anyone who wants to combine waterscapes, nature trails and unusual cultural discoveries. Rainy Lake is 60 miles long and includes 200 islands within Voyageurs National Park. The lake offers opportunities for boating, camping, paddling and fishing. Voyageurs National Park complements these water experiences with guided boat tours, canoe tours and hikes. More than 270 campsites, as well as opportunities for lakeside camping, offer different ways to experience the landscape.
When looking for a vacation rental or vacation home in Koochiching, it therefore helps to first determine the desired travel pace. Travelers who want to spend as much time as possible on the water will plan differently from those who want to combine short distances, nature observation, history or winter activities. The choice of accommodation can then be based on the planned activities and personal daily routine, without assuming a single type of vacation.
Nature Trails and Observations by the Water
In Franz Jevne State Park, trails pass moss-covered rock outcrops, stands of aspen, pine and fir, as well as open hardwood floodplains. The Hiking Club Trail ends at a viewpoint on the Rainy River. Just outside the park, there is a public boat access on the Rainy River for fishing and outings. Pelicans can be observed on the water, while bald eagles sit in the trees along the river. The hike-in campsites each have a picnic table and a fire ring.
The Rainy Lake Recreation Trail offers views of forest, lake and wetland landscapes. A shorter discovery is the Ethnobotanical Garden Trail: The easy trail is less than a quarter mile long, includes a reconstruction of a traditional Ojibwe camp and offers a view of Black Bay. The trailhead is behind the Rainy Lake Visitor Center; the trail can be reached from the Oberholtzer Trail. In addition, park rangers offer guided tours through gardens that are about a quarter mile long and feature stone sculptures, terraced flower beds built up in layers, building remnants and winding paths.
History and Unusual Attractions
Kettle Falls combines scenery with history. The Kettle Falls Hotel has accommodated and served travelers since 1913 and is accessible exclusively by water. Kettle Falls was a historic travel route used by Indigenous peoples, voyageurs and gold prospectors. Also on the north shore of Kabetogama Lake are the Ellsworth Rock Gardens, an art landscape where natural and cultural interests come together.
The Bronko-Nagurski Museum provides another cultural highlight, with exhibits and memorabilia from the life and career of Bronko Nagurski. Smokey Bear Park is home to a 26-foot-tall, 82-ton Smokey Bear figure. The Koochiching Museums provide information reaching back 10,000 years. The range therefore extends from regional history to a highly visible landmark in the local landscape.
Active Days in Every Season
Voyageurs National Park has 110 miles of marked and groomed snowmobile trails. The Blue Ox Trail is an approximately 74-mile-long, year-round multi-use trail system in Koochiching County. Near Lake Bemidji State Park, it connects with the Paul Bunyan State Trail. This creates a clear choice for travel planning between water activities, hikes, cultural stops and winter trails.
