Carver combines lake landscapes, prairie, forests and diverse trails with nature centers, historic places and special wildlife-watching experiences. Anyone looking for a vacation rental or vacation home can make their preferred type of trip the starting point for choosing a location: long stretches along the water, short nature walks, bike rides, family activities or excursions focused on a special theme.

Lakes, forests and trails for active days

Several Regional Trails give Carver a distinctive character for hikers and cyclists. The approximately 2-mile County Road 11 Regional Trail is paved and runs between County Road 10 and County Road 61. It is suitable for walking and hiking, cycling, running, walking dogs, inline skating and roller skiing. The 12.4-mile Dakota Rail Regional Trail follows a former railroad line through the northern part of Carver County.

Longer excursions can also be planned around the trails. The Lake Minnetonka Regional Trail is approximately 15 miles long and runs between the Carver Park Reserve and Hopkins. The Minnesota River Bluffs Regional Trail measures approximately 8.5 miles and runs along the southern border of Carver County, parallel to the Minnesota River. In the Carver Park Reserve, the Monarch Singletrack Trail offers more than 14 miles with difficulty levels ranging from easy to challenging. It includes five loops through wetlands, grasslands and wooded areas; one trail was designed for adaptive bicycles. The trail is also intended for hikers and snowshoers.

Nature experiences with different focuses

Several natural areas are available for a more relaxed day. Baylor Regional Park is a 201-acre park on Eagle Lake. In spring, the Maple Trail hosts maple syrup programs and demonstrations on collecting maple sap and making maple syrup. Lake Minnewashta Regional Park includes approximately 5 miles of trails through wooded areas, prairie habitats and lakeside landscapes. Travelers with dogs will find a fenced, 18-acre off-leash area there, with separate sections for large and small dogs, as well as approximately 1 mile of trails for dogs and their owners.

Lake Waconia Regional Park is located on the southern shore of Lake Waconia and covers 164 acres. Its sledding hill is normally open from December through March, weather and conditions permitting. Carver Park Reserve has paved loop trails with a connection in the central park area that lead through the Big Woods and along numerous marsh areas. No admission fees are charged for visiting Carver County's regional parks.

Astronomy, history and special discoveries

Eagle Lake Observatory is located in Baylor Regional Park. Its offerings include astronomy classes, public observing events and opportunities to explore the night sky. At public star parties, you can observe the sky through telescopes and take advantage of astronomy learning opportunities. Lowry Nature Center was the first public nature center in the Twin Cities. It offers interpretive exhibits, encounters with resident animals and opportunities for wildlife observation. The 250-acre interpretive area includes lakes, tamarack wetlands, cattail marshes and deciduous forests, interconnected by hiking trails.

The county's history is also present at several locations. The Carver County Historical Society has five galleries on local history and one gallery honoring veterans. Scavenger hunts are offered for visiting children. Coney Island of the West is a 34-acre historic island in Lake Waconia and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Grimm Farm Historic Site presents Minnesota's agricultural heritage; the Grimm family's seed selection practices led to the first winter-hardy alfalfa in North America.

Choose the right base for your trip

Those who want to combine different activities will find that the Highway 5 Regional Trail connects with the Carver Park Reserve and, via local trails along Highway 41, with Lake Minnewashta Regional Park. The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is also located in Carver County and offers different ways to visit: The Prairie includes a 0.5-mile trail along the original Big Woods and a 22-acre prairie. Live, narrated tram tours travel along the Three-Mile Drive through collections, display gardens and the Farm at the Arb. The Guided Garden Tours last 30 minutes, include 4 to 6 stops and follow a fully accessible route.

When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether long trail days, lakes and nature observation, historic discoveries or a varied arboretum experience should be the focus. No boat launch permits are required at the boat launches on Parley Lake, Lake Auburn and Lake Zumbra in the Carver Park Reserve. Seasonal camping is available at Baylor Regional Park from the second full weekend in May through the second full weekend in October.
