Olmsted combines extensive trails, diverse landscapes, and a tangible history. For families and other travelers who want to combine active days with cultural discoveries, the region offers a variety of travel ideas: You can travel along former railway lines, fish in rivers, explore historic houses, or include seasonal offerings in your plans. When searching for accommodation, it is therefore worthwhile to first determine the focus of your trip.

Trails and Landscapes for Active Days

The Douglas State Trail is 12.5 miles long and was established on a decommissioned railway line. It passes through rural and agricultural landscapes. The Great River Ridge State Trail currently offers just over 13 miles of paved trail. Those who want to compare different types of trails will find two clearly described options for planning their day.

The parks also emphasize different features. At Oxbow Park, about eight miles of hiking trails run through undeveloped prairies and wooded hills. Three free themed activity backpacks are also available for use in the park, and an orienteering course was established by a local Eagle Scout. Quarry Hill Park in Rochester includes forest, prairie, oak savanna, a fishing pond, sandstone caves, a fossil quarry, and hiking and walking trails. Quarry Hill Nature Center is free and open 361 days a year.

At the Root River, Root River Park has a two-mile loop trail through meadows and wooded hills. Fishing is also possible there. At Lake Zumbro Park, you can fish from the shore and from docks. These differences help you choose the focus of your vacation without requiring you to spend every day in the same way.

History Through Houses, Schools, and Exhibits

Olmsted can also be explored through individual historic sites. Historic Mayowood is a 38-room house built in 1910 by Dr. Charles H. Mayo and his wife, Edith. Visits are possible only as part of guided tours. At the Plummer House, open-house tours for self-guided visits take place every Wednesday from February through November.

The “Olmsted County Exhibit” presents the history of Olmsted County from prehistoric times to the present. This includes the history of the Indigenous population, early European settlers, and surveying. The George Stoppel Farmstead has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1975 and offers insight into rural life as well as immigration and settlement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Dee Cabin, also called the Dee Log Cabin, was built in 1862 by early Rochester settlers William and Bridget Dee.

The Hadley Valley Schoolhouse was built in 1885 in Haverhill Township, about three miles northeast of Rochester, as a one-room school for boys and girls through eighth grade, and served this purpose until 1957. A trip focused on regional history therefore offers different perspectives: the residence, school, farmstead, and exhibit each tell a different story.

Planning Seasonal Experiences

At Chester Woods Park, the swimming beach and beach house with showers are open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. The Rochester Farmers Market is a producer-only market and is tied to the seasons and climate. Every Saturday, the market also offers free outdoor community exercise classes. In winter, the Rattler Trail in Gamehaven Park adds to the offerings: It is a machine-built snow trail that is frequently groomed, packed, and tracked with a snowcat.

When choosing a vacation rental or vacation home in Olmsted, you can base your decision on these interests: trails and parks represent active days, historic sites offer in-depth discoveries, and the market and seasonal offerings create a changing character of travel.
