Chippewa County: Nature, River and History
Accommodation in Chippewa County
Chippewa County offers several ways to shape your travel plans: nature at Lac qui Parle Lake, sections of the Minnesota River State Trail, and a wide range of historical themes. First consider what you want your stay to focus on. That way, you can tailor your search for a vacation rental to your interests instead of treating nature, cycling and culture as equally important by default.
Nature Between Lake and Wildlife Refuge
The Lac qui Parle Wildlife Management Area includes land in Chippewa County and extends across four counties in total. It therefore covers a larger area than a single day-trip destination: for geographic orientation, the entire area matters, while only part of it lies in the county. Lac qui Parle State Park was established in 1941 for recreation at Lac qui Parle Lake. Together, the two names point to different relationships with nature—a wildlife area with land in several counties and a park whose purpose is connected to the lake.
This distinction is useful when planning your trip: if you are especially interested in wildlife areas, you can focus on the four-county Wildlife Management Area; if you want to center your visit on the lake, Lac qui Parle State Park offers a separate point of interest. The information refers to different geographic scales, not interchangeable names for the same place.
Cycling the Minnesota River State Trail
More than 14 miles of the Minnesota River State Trail are complete across four sections. The sections connect Ortonville, Appleton, Milan and Montevideo with the Minnesota River Valley. Two paved sections can be distinguished more precisely by their length and endpoints: the 5.5-mile section runs from Montevideo to Wegdahl County Park. Another, 3-mile section connects Milan with the Milan bridge area and Lac qui Parle Lake.
If you are looking for a shorter section to help plan your trip, the section starting in Milan is the shorter of the two paved sections described; the section starting in Montevideo is longer. Their endpoints also differ. Length and endpoints therefore offer a practical guide for choosing, without confusing the two routes. For planning the trail as a whole, the four completed sections and their connection to the Minnesota River Valley are also important. Since infrastructure information can change, check the current trail status before your trip.
Arts and Crafts, Collections and Local History
In Milan, the Milan Village Arts School typically offers, among other things, Norwegian knife making, basket weaving, Rosemaling design and painting, blacksmithing, and acanthus woodcarving each year. The school uses a relocated old schoolhouse in downtown Milan as its classroom. Its range spans everything from design and painting to hands-on crafts. Courses offered on a particular date may vary, so check the specific program before your trip.
In Montevideo, Historic Chippewa City recreates a late-19th-century village on 20 acres with 24 buildings. The Gippe Cabin at the site also houses a Minnesota River dugout canoe. The Chippewa River dugout canoe is displayed in a special exhibition case. These are two different canoes, each with its own display.
The Olaf Swensson Farm Museum includes a timber-frame barn, the remains of a grist mill and hand-hewn granite monuments.
Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests
If the Minnesota River State Trail is the focus of your trip, the listed lengths and endpoints can help you choose the right sections. For a focus on cultural history, you can instead weigh the different themes: Dakota history and language history, a late-19th-century village, historical photographs or agricultural traces. billy's maple tree's offers a different focus: the store carries fair-trade foods from around the world. It adds an international selection of goods to your trip planning, not a regional food tradition.
The Swensson Farm Museum is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m., from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend; private tours are available by appointment only. Since seasonal opening hours depend on volunteer support, confirm them before you arrive. Whatever matters most to you—lake, cycling route, arts and crafts, or history—can be the starting point for your search for a vacation rental in Chippewa County.
