Stearns County combines river landscapes, extensive trails, vibrant cultural attractions and regional specialties. Those planning a trip around different interests will find both nature experiences and museums, crafts, encounters with animals and culinary discoveries here. When searching for a vacation rental or vacation home, it is therefore worth deciding early on what focus you want: Should the vacation be shaped primarily by trails and landscapes, by culture or by family-friendly experiences?

Nature, Rivers and Trails for Active Days

A distinctive landscape area is the Saint John’s Abbey Arboretum. It covers more than 2,500 acres with lakes, prairie, oak savanna and woodland around Saint John’s Abbey and Saint John’s University. More than 15 miles of trails also run around the Abbey and the University. This makes it possible to plan an extended stay across different landscapes without overlooking the cultural side of the destination.

The Mississippi River County Park also provides a clear landscape highlight. The park covers 230 acres along a 1.3-mile stretch of the Mississippi River. At Quarry Park and Nature Preserve, wooded areas, open prairie, wetlands and areas of exposed bedrock alternate. Mountain bike trails lead over exposed rock there; the historic Liberty Derrick serves as an exhibit commemorating Minnesota’s granite quarrying industry.

For longer tours, the 62-mile paved Lake Wobegon Trail is a good option. It leads through forests, along lakes and through smaller communities and is open to bicycles, roller skates, snowmobiles without studs and hikers. The Dairyland Trail runs 10 miles from Elrosa to 315th Avenue in New Munich. Those who want to combine different distances and modes of transportation can take these trails into account when planning their itinerary. In winter, cross-country ski trails are available at Quarry Park and Nature Preserve, Warner Lake County Park, Mississippi River County Park and Kraemer Lake - Wildwood County Park.

Culture, Gardens and Regional History

The Paramount Center for the Arts in Saint Cloud includes a renovated historic theater with 800 seats that was built in 1921. In the visual arts area, it also offers classes in pottery, drawing, painting, glasswork, woodworking, textile arts and jewelry making. The Stearns History Museum presents exhibitions, programs and activities about the county’s diverse history. It is currently open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; the Research Center is accessible by appointment on Tuesdays.

Saint John’s Pottery welcomes visitors to its gallery, sells ceramics and offers guided studio tours. Visiting hours are Monday through Friday from 1:15 to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Another historical landmark is the Quadrangle of Saint John’s Abbey, into which the first brick buildings and the church were incorporated. It was completed in 1886.

For quieter parts of the trip, Munsinger Gardens offers winding paths, while Clemens Gardens features brick-paved paths. In summer, concerts take place at Munsinger Gardens every second Sunday from mid-June onward, near the gazebo on the Mississippi River. This allows you to alternate between walks, cultural programs and outdoor events when planning your trip.

Cheese, Maple Syrup and Family Experiences

The regional cuisine can be experienced at Redhead Creamery. The family-run Jer-Lindy Farm offers year-round tours of the cheese-making process. Afterwards, visitors can use the on-site cheese shop for lunch and shopping. Wildwood Ranch in Kraemer Lake - Wildwood County Park has been a family-run, modern maple syrup operation for more than 40 years. Those who want to plan a visit to a zoo can experience feeding giraffes at Hemker Park & Zoo.

When choosing your accommodation, you can use your preferred daily rhythm as a starting point: trails and landscapes are suitable for an active focus, museums and art venues for cultural discoveries, while farm visits, gardens and giraffe feeding offer further ideas to enjoy together. For further location options, you can choose Paynesville, Sauk Centre, Albany, Waite Park, Sartell and Saint Augusta. If you would also like to compare other destinations, you can find Martin County and Dakota County: Nature, Family Destinations and a Suitable Vacation Base here.
