When considering Redwood County as a vacation destination, you can plan your trip around specific interests: nature, trails, history, golf, or regional food and drink. Wetlands and grassland offer a different focus than a park with footbridges and a scenic overlook; museums, in turn, tell different stories. This variety gives you a starting point for deciding which experiences you want to shape your vacation.

Landscape, Trails, and Water

Lamberton Wildlife Area lies in southeastern Redwood County and covers just under 1,400 acres. It is centered around a large wetland with a creek and surrounding grassland. The area is located along roads and is easy to reach. For trip planning, this combination offers a specific connection to nature: if you are interested in wetland habitats, creeks, and grassland, you can take this landscape into account when choosing your destinations.

Ramsey Park covers 256 acres and is Minnesota’s largest municipal park. Its miles of trails and footbridges invite visitors to hike and jog. Several signed trailheads with maps help you find your way along the trails. The scenic overlook at Ramsey Falls offers picturesque views of the falls. The Ramsey Park Zoo is home to bison, elk, deer, and prairie dogs on a permanent basis; the animal populations may change over time. The park therefore offers several distinct interests side by side: trails and outdoor activity, a scenic overlook, and the animal groups at the zoo.

The Redwood River is designated as a trout stream and was established as a state water trail in 2007. At the Lower Sioux Agency, the trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset. If these trails are part of your day’s plans, check the opening information again before you arrive. The river and the agency thus offer different points of interest for planning: the two designated features of the Redwood River on the one hand, and the specific daily opening hours of the trails at the Lower Sioux Agency on the other.

History and Other Interests

The Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum in Walnut Grove consists of seven buildings that tell the stories of Laura Ingalls Wilder and other pioneers. The museum’s composition may change over time. The Redwood County Museum follows a different historical thread: it is located in a building constructed in 1908 as the county poor farm. While the stories of Wilder and other pioneers take center stage in Walnut Grove, the Redwood County Museum’s original use of the building provides its own historical connection.

Golf and food and drink can also round out your travel interests. Dacotah Ridge Golf Club is an 18-hole golf course set on 240 acres of rolling landscape. Grandview Valley Winery offers wine, draft beer, appetizers, desserts, and pizza; its food and drink offerings may change. Alongside nature and history, golf and a specific selection of drinks and food are therefore also identified as distinct themes.

Choosing a Focus for Your Trip

When searching for a vacation rental, it helps to first decide what mix of activities you want during your vacation. Would you like to focus on trails and nature, are you especially interested in historical themes, or would you like to include golf or food and drink? If several places matter to you, make a note of them before you search, then consider which location best supports your plans. This way, you can choose accommodations based on the experiences that truly matter to your trip.
