Holiday apartment in Tjörn: Archipelago, hiking and culture

Tjörn is shaped by the vastness of an archipelago and an unusually diverse landscape. The sea, nature, seafaring, art, agriculture and historic sites are among the island’s defining features. The Tjörn archipelago comprises 1,546 islands and skerries, some of which are inhabited. On Tjörn, the sea alternates with large deciduous forests, lakes, marshes, swamps, mountains and cultivated landscapes.

Landscape

Toftenäs combines rocky ridges and rift valleys with diverse shoreline flora, a varied birdlife and small-scale farming. The area is part of the Natura 2000 network and lies directly next to Skärhamn on Tjörn. At Sundsby Manor, the park, garden and hiking trails are open around the clock all year round.

Hiking and cycling

Skärhamnsvandringen is an easy route of approximately 5 kilometres through the oldest part of Skärhamn to Hamneberget. It leads to the maritime museum, the town’s first post office, Brunnsparken and a Bronze Age burial mound. At Sundsby, the trails offer views over the Stigfjord, lead through a beech grove and pass through narrow passages and caves.

On Dyrön, there is a yellow circular trail of approximately 5 kilometres around the island, as well as a blue 1.6-kilometre trail across the mountains from north to south. Wild mouflon can be observed on the hiking trails. The hiking trails on Härön partly run through a nature reserve and offer several alternative routes. Another relatively easy hiking trail leads to Vetteberget and a summit 116 metres above sea level; from there, the view extends across the sea to the western horizon.

Tjörn can also be explored by bicycle on a variety of surfaces. There are cycling loops with views of the sea and islands, as well as gravel roads through historic cultivated landscapes.

Water

Swimming options on Tjörn include sandy beaches and rocky bathing spots with diving towers. Paddling is possible on the Stigfjord and Hakefjord, where there are both open sea and sheltered bays.

Culture and history

The Nordic Watercolour Museum in Skärhamn opened in the summer of 2000 and has become an institution for watercolour art in the Nordic countries and Europe. The museum has guest studios for professional artists as well as an open studio where beginners can try out watercolour techniques.

Pilane combines traces of Stone Age settlements and Iron Age graves with world-class art in a vibrant agricultural landscape. The Pilane burial ground comprises approximately 90 Iron Age stone circles, standing stones and stone settings. By prior arrangement, Pilane offers guided tours for groups.

The Pater Noster lighthouse is 32 metres high and was designed by Nils Gustav von Heidenstam. In 2015, it was declared a state-listed historic building of high cultural and historical value. Säbygården is a large farm dating from the early 19th century and one of the best-preserved buildings of its kind in Bohuslän. Since the beginning of the 1980s, Säbygården has been a venue for cultural activities and welcomes visitors.

The museum in Klädesholmen presents the history and development of the town, focusing on fish and herring processing from approximately 1860 to 1960. Another local tradition is Community Day, Samhällets dag, which has been celebrated in Klädesholmen since 1972 with numerous activities and a communal herring meal.

Local life

Several farm shops and stalls on Tjörn offer local produce and homemade delicacies, allowing visitors to buy directly from the producer. The Tjörn Tourist Office provides visitors with tips and offers maps and brochures. It also sells tickets for Västtrafik buses and ferries.
