Kyrkesund combines the history of an old fishing village with swimming opportunities, distinctive buildings and a short ferry connection to Härön. Those looking for a holiday apartment on Tjörn will find a place where harbour atmosphere, culture and nature come together to create different kinds of holiday days. Depending on your interests, you can plan a day of swimming at Linneviken, discover historical traces or explore hiking trails of various lengths on Härön.

Fishing History on the Way to the Harbour

Kyrkesund lies in the northwest of Tjörn and shows its character particularly clearly along the road to the harbour. White wooden houses and red boathouses line the way; they were built during the herring periods of the 18th and 19th centuries. This row of houses illustrates the village’s past without requiring an extensive programme. For families, a walk through Kyrkesund can therefore be a peaceful introduction to the region’s history, while older children and adults can explore the traces of the former fishing industry.

At the southern entrance is “Kålhuvudet”, a trankokeri dating from 1780 that can still be visited. Villa Solfrid also complements the historical picture: the present-day museum features period-typical interior furnishings and atmosphere. The building is a large stone house commissioned in 1916 by Elin Sundberg, also known as “the gold miner’s daughter”. Sankt Olovs valar is also considered one of the best-known sea marks in Bohuslän and adds another distinctive feature to the region’s cultural and landscape character.

Linneviken for Family Swimming Days

The Linneviken bathing area has a sandy beach and a floating bathing jetty. The gently sloping sandy beach is considered suitable for families with children. The bathing area is also partly adapted for accessibility and has a staircase. This makes it possible to enjoy a varied stay in Kyrkesund even when not every holiday day is meant to consist of a longer hike or a historical visit.

At the entrance to the village, there are signposted visitor parking spaces next to the Linneviken bathing area. From there, it is about a 10-minute walk to the ferry landing. This information can help with planning your day: you can choose the bathing area as a separate activity or continue from there on a ferry trip to Härön. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is therefore worth deciding on your preferred rhythm in advance – focusing on local history, swimming or the island’s natural environment.

Härön: Short Ferry Ride and Trails Through Nature

Härön can be reached from Kyrkesund by a ferry crossing of approximately five minutes. The island was declared a nature reserve in 1999 because of its rich flora and natural values. Härön has hiking trails of various lengths; a hiking map can be purchased on the ferry.

This results in a clear distinction when choosing the focus of your holiday: Kyrkesund itself offers harbour scenery, a bathing area and historical sites, while Härön focuses on natural values and hiking trails of varying lengths.

Getting to Kyrkesund

On the way to Pilane, turn off at Vallhamnskorsningen where the signs point to Kyrkesund, drive past Kållekärr and continue for another 3 kilometres. At the roundabout, turn right towards Kyrkesund. Then follow the road for 4.5 kilometres and turn left at the signs for Pilane and Gravfält. The signposted visitor parking spaces at the entrance to the village provide a practical starting point for Linneviken or the ferry landing.
