Stora Dyrön is a destination for travellers who want to combine nature experiences, island history and days by the water. When hiking, sheltered, lush forest alternates with steep mountains and sea views. There are also geological features, historical traces, swimming spots and opportunities to get to know the island on a guided tour. Depending on whether you primarily want to hike, swim or discover history, you can choose your holiday apartment and plan your stay accordingly.

Hiking between forest, rocks and sea views

The blue hiking trail crosses Stora Dyrön from north to south and is 1.6 kilometres long. This makes it a manageable route for an active outing, without committing you to a longer circuit. Those planning a longer hike can choose Dyröleden. This trail runs for 5 kilometres around Dyrön.

Dyröleden also includes a narrow gorge between two high rock walls. Together with the forest sections, steep mountains and sea views, this creates a varied landscape along the way. In the northeast of Stora Dyrön, there are also pillow lava formations that are considered unique in Sweden. This distinctive geological feature complements the classic hiking scenery with a detail that gives the island its own character.

Historical traces and life on Dyrön

The island’s history stretches back more than 3,000 years. In the west of Stora Dyrön are the remains of a Stone Age settlement and the remains of a Bronze Age burial mound. Those who also look for historical points of interest while hiking will find two different testimonies to earlier settlement there.

The small Minnenas Bod museum offers insights into the more recent past. The permanent exhibition includes school materials, newspaper clippings, photographs and books about life on Dyrön in the past. The history also includes 2 September 1743: on that day, Dyrön was bought back from the Crown by two farmers.

Swimming spots, sauna and guided experiences

At Hala swimming spot at Sydhamnen, there is a small sandy beach, a bathing jetty and a three-metre diving tower. Dyröns badplats also has a small sandy beach, bathing jetties and rocks. Access to Dyröns badplats is partially accessible: a wide staircase slopes gently down to the water. Dyröns samhällsförening also holds a swimming school there.

West of Sydhamnen, there is a sauna by the hiking trail that can be rented. Those who would rather get to know the island with knowledgeable guidance can book a local island tour. Such a tour lasts about two hours; the local island tours can be booked year-round. This makes it possible to combine active, historical and more relaxing activities without limiting your stay to a single type of holiday.

Getting there and practical information

A passenger ferry runs to Dyrön from the quay in Rönnäng. In addition, Gunnars Båtturer operates Västtrafik route 326 year-round between Dyrön Södra, Rökan and Rörtången, as well as in the opposite direction. When planning your stay, it is useful to consider your preferred combination of hiking trails, swimming spots, the museum and an island tour when choosing your location. Stora Dyrön also has an ICA shop that is open year-round.
