Falkenberg: Ätran, Coast and Culture

In the centre of Falkenberg, the Ätran flows into the Kattegat; before that, it runs through the Ätradalen valley. In the salmon fishing area, the stretch extends from Hertingforsen to Hålan and is divided into three sections.

Over two kilometres, you can walk between the fishing spots; permitted methods include spinning, fly-fishing and traditional shrimp fishing. Öresundståg trains stop at Falkenberg station on their journeys north or south. Buses serving the urban area and the surrounding region operate from the bus station on Holgersgatan.

Nature

A footbridge and cycle bridge crosses Hertingforsen, allowing you to explore the area from both sides. Thanks to the restoration of Hertingforsen, migratory fish such as salmon, sea trout, eel and lamprey can live and reproduce in the Ätran and move between the river and the sea.

Skrea strand is a two-kilometre-long sandy beach that can be reached on foot or by bicycle via the beach promenades. The sea sauna run by Falkenbergs Kallbadsvänner is open to members and the general public; it is located at Bacchus väg 1 directly by the sea and is open all year round.

Culture

In Gamla Stan, Falkenberg preserves crooked, winding wooden houses and a medieval church. Tullbron was built between 1756 and 1761 and has been listed as a historic monument since 1984. In Falkenberg’s Old Town, the sights are within a short distance of one another; much can be experienced in the centre in a single day.

S:t Laurentii Church contains 16th-century wall paintings and 18th-century ceiling paintings; it is Falkenberg’s oldest building and has medieval origins.

Falkenbergs Hembygdsmuseum presents Falkenberg’s history from prehistoric times to the early 20th century. The ruins of Falkenberg Castle preserve the remains of a defensive castle built towards the end of the 13th century.

Rian is located downstream of Tullbron on the Ätran River in Falkenberg. It is housed in a building constructed using half-timbering in 1865, which originally served as a granary.

Rian presents three new exhibitions each year; the temporary exhibitions cover subjects ranging from industrial design to handicrafts. The programme includes guided exhibition tours, lectures, workshops and themed city tours.

Cycling

Toveks Bilmuseum in Falkenberg displays more than 80 vehicles from several eras and includes Sweden’s only privately owned Audi F1 car.

The Monarkmuseum displays products designed by Monark from 1908 to the present day. The exhibits include bicycles, mopeds and motorcycles from Monark’s heyday, as well as Monark radios and televisions; the museum also features original Monark and Crescent exhibits and newspaper advertisements.

Kattegattleden runs through the Falkenberg area from Morup in the north to Steninge in the south, mostly close to the coast and free of motor traffic. Vallarna offers a playground, parkour, an adventure course, a hobby-horse track and a petting zoo.
