Those who choose Falkenberg as a holiday destination will find opportunities for historical discoveries, walks along the Ätran, cycling tours and excursions into the nearby coastal landscape. This makes it possible to explore the town through a range of travel ideas: one day can be devoted to cultural buildings and museums, and another to the promenades or the Grimsholmen nature reserve. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is helpful to decide on the main focus of your trip at an early stage.

Historical Traces in Falkenberg

S:t Laurentii kyrka is Falkenberg's oldest building and was erected around 1300. It is also the town's only surviving medieval building. The defensive fortress Borgen Falkenberg, built towards the end of the 13th century as an outpost of the Danish monarchy, tells another part of the town's history. Its ruins are located at the eastern end of Tullbron.

Tullbron itself is also a worthwhile point of interest on a cultural and historical tour. It was built between 1756 and 1761 and has been protected as a listed building since 1984. Falkenberg Church provides a later architectural accent: the neo-Gothic church was designed by Adrian C. Peterson and inaugurated on 14 October 1892.

For a deeper exploration of the past, visit Rian and the Falkenbergs Hembygdsmuseum. Rian presents temporary exhibitions and manages cultural and historical collections and environments. The Hembygdsmuseum documents the history of the town from antiquity to the early 20th century. It is located in a well-preserved building in the old town and has a museum garden.

Promenades Along the Ätran and Routes to the Beach

Falkenberg offers several routes that allow you to incorporate exercise and scenery into your daily plans. Laxpromenaden is a walking and cycling path along the Ätran through a scenic setting. The two-kilometre walking route Doktorspromenaden also runs along the Ätran and was completed in 1861.

Strandpromenaden connects Falkenberg town centre with Skrea Beach on foot in about half an hour. This approximate travel time can be helpful when planning a day between the town and the beach. If you prefer a longer cycling tour, Kattegattleden is a national cycle route that runs through the whole of Halland. The section in Falkenberg is varied; the route between Gothenburg and Helsingborg is 39 miles long in total and runs mostly close to the coast and away from motor traffic.

Grimsholmen and the Coast

The Grimsholmen nature reserve is located near Falkenberg. The landscape there is characterised by open coastal heathland, botanically interesting beach meadows, areas rich in boulders and small sandy beaches suitable for swimming. Kattegattleden passes by the nature reserve and its car park. The car park is served by the “Grimsholmen Broberg” bus stop.
