Discover Älvsered: Trails, Water and History
Accommodation in Älvsered
Älvsered combines diverse natural surroundings, experiences on the water and a multifaceted history. The town is part of Trivselbygden, a cross-border area between Halland, Småland and Västergötland, and is one of eleven places in this region. For planning your trip, Älvsered offers various options: you can choose a longer hiking trail, take a shorter loop, paddle on the Högvadsån or discover historic traces around the town.
Hiking through forests, lakes and the old border
The Vandringsled Östdanmark hiking trail is 17 kilometres long. It begins in Ålarp near Älvsered and ends at Ulvanstorp. If you prefer a shorter route, the nine-kilometre “lilla leden” offers a smaller loop. The trail follows the former Danish-Swedish border. Along the route, 35 signs explain the history of the surrounding area and give the hike a historical focus.
The scenery is also varied: the trail leads through large forests, past streams and lakes, and across marshes. There are also two wind shelters and a barbecue area along the Vandringsled Östdanmark. The different route lengths help you adapt your day’s plans to the type of tour you want, without having to commit to a single standard route. For shorter walks and runs, the Motionsspår, Älvsered exercise trails are also available.
Canoeing on the Högvadsån
Högvads Kanot rents out canoes and kayaks for paddling on the Högvadsån in Älvsered. There are signposted parking spaces at Ödegärdsvägen 2 for getting started. The canoe tour there and back takes approximately 3 to 4 hours at a leisurely pace and without breaks. If the water level is low, you may need to get out and carry the canoe for a short distance. This limitation is part of the practical planning for the route.
After about 20 minutes of paddling from Älvsered, you reach the bathing area at Horsasjön with a bathing jetty. The Högvadsån is also known for its salmon and sea trout spawning grounds. If you would rather explore the area on two wheels, you can consider the Pyttebaneleden cycle path. It runs along the old railway embankment between Ullared and Älvsered and is easy to cycle. The path follows the former route of Falkenbergs järnväg, which operated from 1896 to 1961 and was called Pyttebanan.
Cultural and historical traces in Älvsered
The cemetery of Älvsered is part of the town’s history. It was established at the beginning of the 19th century in connection with the construction of the new church in 1836–1837. Many of the old gravestones are considered to be of particular cultural and historical value. The site of the former medieval wooden church is marked by a memorial stone. Älvsered Church also has one of the oldest church bells in Sweden that is still in use.
Nearby, Danabäcks sten is designated as a cultural heritage monument. The stone served for around 600 years as one of the boundary stones between Sweden and Denmark. It therefore complements the historical references along the hiking trail with a specific site marking the former border. Högvads Ljus & Textil offers another opportunity to get creative yourself: the candle factory offers bookable half-day creative experiences.
Which accommodation suits your travel plans?
For a trip involving longer hikes, the length of the route, the historical signs and the scenery of the Vandringsled Östdanmark are important points of reference. If you prefer water-based activities, canoes and kayaks on the Högvadsån, the bathing area at Horsasjön and the particularities of the water level will be central to your planning. Those interested in culture can include the cemetery, church, memorial stone and Danabäcks sten in their explorations. This allows you to choose your accommodation based on the experiences that interest you most in Älvsered.
