Discover Jaraguas: Saltworks, Festivals and Trails

Jaraguas takes you deep into the history of salt production through the Jaraguas saltworks, also known as Mina Lolita. They preserve a central well, around six smaller wells, approximately 25 crystallisation ponds, and five areas for drying and loading the salt. The saltworks were public land and were used for salt production by around twenty families from Jaraguas. The saltworks near Jaraguas were already being exploited in Iberian times. The site therefore includes water sources, crystallisation ponds, and areas for the subsequent processing of the salt.

The town's main attractions range from the saltworks to festivals and the chapel, as well as hiking and cycling routes.

Culture

The patron saints of Jaraguas are Saint Francis Xavier, celebrated on 3 December, and Our Lady of the Forsaken, whose feast is held on the second Sunday in May. The Mayos tradition in Jaraguas includes songs sung for the Virgin and for young women on the night of 30 April. The Chapel of Saint Francis Xavier had a bell tower and was open and suitable for religious services. The cultural calendar in Jaraguas includes 30 April, the second Sunday in May, and 3 December.

Landscape

Jaraguas lies at the confluence of the Albosa, de los Encaños and Salada ramblas. The Fuente Amparo in Jaraguas is associated with a washhouse and a monumental group of poplars and willows. The Fuente del Amparo in Jaraguas dates from 1911. Within the municipality of Venta del Moro, Jaraguas developed into an important agricultural and wine-growing centre. Watercourses, the spring and the town's development are therefore situated in different geographical and historical contexts.

Hiking and Cycling

The municipality of Venta del Moro has approved hiking trails that can be used on foot and by mountain bike and that include, among other destinations, a visit to the Jaraguas saltworks. The PR-CV-338 Venta del Moro–Jaraguas route is intended for hiking and cycling tours. Following a negative quality inspection, the PR-CV 338 Venta del Moro–Jaraguas route has temporarily been withdrawn until defects in the signage or route continuity have been remedied. When planning your route, you should consider the intended use together with the stated status. For specific planning, the status of the route mentioned should be taken into account, as should the general reference to the use of approved trails.
