Chulilla: Climbing, Canyons and Medieval Local History

Chulilla displays its distinctive combination of rock, river and history particularly clearly where the landscape meets the medieval townscape. Las Hoces de Chulilla form an impressive canyon with walls up to 160 metres deep and 10 metres wide. El Charco Azul is a natural pool on the Río Turia between very high vertical rock walls. The municipality of Chulilla is characterised by a genuinely medieval urban structure between the Castillo and the Río Turia.

Climbing and Hiking Trails

The Chulilla climbing area has long routes on vertical slabs. The Chulilla climbing school offers routes of varying difficulty and with different wall aspects. A large part of Chulilla's climbing sectors is located in the Los Calderones municipal nature area. The best time for climbing in Chulilla is from October to June. Difficulty, wall aspect and season provide three different points of comparison for climbing days.

The PR-CV 77 is a linear hiking trail measuring 5.50 km. It begins at Plaza de la Baronia in Chulilla and runs through the Barranco de Vallfiguera to the Loriguilla reservoir. The PR-CV 77.1 is also a linear hiking trail, 3.50 km long, and connects the PR-CV 77 with the CV-3960 road. The Los Calderones municipal nature area can be reached from Chulilla via the Ruta de los Pantaneros. The Barranco de la Falfiguera can be reached via the PR 77 hiking trail. The different lengths of the two linear trails offer you a clear basis for comparison when planning.

Anyone comparing the two linear trails will notice not only their different distances but also their different connections: the PR-CV 77 leads from the town square through the Barranco de Vallfiguera to the reservoir, while the PR-CV 77.1 links the shorter route with the CV-3960 road. Route and length therefore remain separate features.

Culture and History

The Castillo de Chulilla is an Islamic-origin hilltop fortress and was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1981. It is open to visitors, and admission is free. The Parish Church of Our Lady of the Angels was built on the site of a mosque in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Hermitage of Saint Barbara dates from 1364, while the Hermitage of Saint Joseph dates from the 17th century.

Among the Chulilla rock paintings is a scene that has no parallel in the Mediterranean region. La Enramá is a traditional festival in Chulilla and takes place every year on the first weekend of May. Buildings, rock paintings and festival traditions provide different chronological perspectives on the town's history.
