Real de Montroi: Magro Loop, Castle and Festival Culture

The Magro River forms a loop around Real de Montroi. Its water is used to irrigate the Huerta of Real de Montroi; the town’s protected areas include sections along the riverbed of the Magro. This connects the river landscape with agricultural use and protected riverside areas.

Culture

The parish church of Sant Pere Apòstol in Real de Montroi was built in 1587 and is located on Calle Mayor in the northern and oldest part of the town centre. A torch is used in the middle of the Ball de la plaça. In Real de Montroi, it is preserved as a traditional dance. The church and the dance belong to different forms of culture: here, a dated building in the town centre is contrasted with a traditional custom featuring a clearly specified detail.

The two historical testimonies also differ in their spatial setting. Sant Pere Apòstol belongs to the northern, oldest part of the town centre, while the remains of Castell dels Alcalans are located on the upper part of a hill. Thus, in Real de Montroi, a religious building with a specific construction year meets an elevated historical site with a Muslim building history.

Festivals

At the beginning of July, Real de Montroi holds patron saint festivities in honour of the Apostle Peter. They include a fully handcrafted procession designed by the local residents themselves. The calendar date, religious occasion and residents’ own work give the festivities their characteristic structure.

The cultural references thus extend from the preserved dance with its torch detail to the festival held on a fixed date in honour of the patron saint. For your own travel planning, these forms can be considered separately: the Ball de la plaça represents a traditional custom, while at the beginning of July the procession in honour of the Apostle Peter is also added.

Getting Around

Real de Montroi is served by the interurban València–Real–Millares bus route. A hiking route to Castell dels Alcalans begins on Calle Paraíso in Real de Montroi. The route follows the banks of the Magro for almost two kilometres and meets the markings of the short PR-CV 457 hiking trail there. At the riverbank, the route continues to Cova Fumada; from there, you have to walk back a short distance in order to climb up to Castell dels Alcalans.

For orientation while travelling, there is therefore a named starting point, a longer riverside section, the markings of PR-CV 457 and the subsequent climb, in a fixed sequence. The València–Real–Millares bus route, by contrast, is part of the town’s transport connections and represents a separate point of reference.
