Discover Larraga: Culture, the Arga and Holiday Rentals

The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel houses a Baroque high altar that is a protected work of art designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). Its extension, carried out in the 16th and 17th centuries, is considered one of the finest Renaissance buildings in Navarre. The organ was built by a local organ-building workshop and displays Baroque and Romantic features. Also protected as a BIC is the Santo Cristo del Socorro, a Romanesque crucifix from the 12th or 13th century. The church is open only during service times.

Culture

The Plaza de los Fueros is designed as a Baroque square. Two sides arranged at angles and lined with arcades form part of the traditional Plaza Mayor layout. The former Hospital de Larraga and an attached pelota court are located on this square. Near the square, on Calle Sor Julia Ruiz, stands a 17th-century palace building. It has two large coats of arms from the same period, including those of the Rodríguez de Arellano family. In the courtyard of this palace building are the remains of Larraga’s old defensive fortifications, built during the First Carlist War in the 19th century.

The historic townscape also includes numerous traditional Bejeras. These stone buildings house beehives used communally.

Food and Drink

In Larraga, Sopa del Niño is a Christmas dessert made with milk, ground almonds, sugar, cinnamon and bread. Tostones are flatbreads typical of Larraga, made with water, anise seeds, sugar, flour and eggs; traditionally, they are prepared mainly in autumn and winter. Both dishes combine ingredients and preparation methods with a clear seasonal connection.

Festivals and Music

Every year, the „Larraga, Tierra de la Vaca Brava“ event opens an agricultural holding to visitors. There, they can learn about the rearing of fighting bulls and traditional work in the countryside. The Ciclo de Órgano Diego Gómez also takes place every year in the second half of August; it includes professional organ and chamber music concerts.

The Javieradas begin with a pilgrimage from Larraga to Sangüesa and continue with a Way of the Cross to Javier. The festivals celebrated in Larraga include processions. The Fiestas in honour of San Miguel Arcángel also include bull runs and Capeas with bulls. Landscape

The banks of the River Arga near Larraga are suitable for peaceful walks and cycling tours through a landscape of farmland and riverside vegetation. From there, visitors can also view the elevated profile of the town. A pine-lined walking path runs along Larraga Hill. This path offers views of central Navarre and the meanders of the River Arga.
