Discover Etxaleku: Churches, Mountains and Trails

Etxaleku begins its historical story with a former church dating from the 14th century. Almost entirely intact original walls and a Gothic door have been preserved.

Culture and History

The present-day church of Etxaleku was built between 1872 and 1876 from partially hewn stone and has a tower. Most of its altarpiece dates from the early 17th century.

Today, only the site and entrance of the former San Pedro chapel remain. Another historical trace leads to Mount Amezti: according to local tradition, three guerrilla fighters known as Maquis were buried there in 1944. A marker was placed on a cross-shaped tree in their memory.

Following restoration work, part of the tree associated with the Maquis cross was returned to Mount Amezti. Visitors are invited to see the part of this history located there.

Mountains and Trails

Pagadiandieta is the most prominent mountain north of Etxaleku and forms a boundary with Ihaben. The routes around the village also showcase different aspects of the landscape.

EuroVelo 1 passes through Etxaleku and continues towards Latasa. In Latasa, the new cycle route connects with the Camino Natural del Plazaola.

The Oskotz–Monte Oianberri–Etxaleku circular route is rated moderate. It includes a forest section about one kilometre long where navigation can be difficult because there are no paths.

A 14.3-kilometre route leads from Latasa via Zarrantz, Oskotz and Etxaleku back to Latasa, passing through Etxaleku along the way. In addition, a signposted network of paths connects the villages in the Imotz and Basaburua valleys via trails and tracks for hikers and mountain bikers.

The routes differ in their moderate rating and the approximately one-kilometre forest section of the circular route, as well as in the 14.3-kilometre length of the route connecting several villages.

Getting There

A local access road connects Etxaleku via several secondary links to the north and south with the Tolosa–Pamplona national road. From Pamplona, the drive leads towards Irurtzun via the AP-15 or N-240-A, then via the A-15 towards Urritza, and in Urritza continues onto the NA-411.
