Discover Leganés: culture, nature and holiday apartments

Leganés is home to the Iglesia parroquial de San Salvador, a remarkable example of 16th- and 17th-century architecture from Madrid.

Culture

The church has twelve altarpieces, including works by the architect and altarpiece artist José Benito de Churriguera from Madrid. As a Bien de Interés Cultural, it is protected in the Monument category. It also houses an organ built in the 18th century.

The Museo de Escultura de Leganés is considered a reference for avant-garde sculpture and covers approximately 27,000 square metres. Its collection includes works by important artists of the 20th century. Activities for adults and children are organised around the museum.

Public transport connections to the museum include bus routes 450, 468 and 481, as well as the Casa del Reloj metro station; the metro lines are designated L1 and L12.

Nature

The Parque Forestal Polvoranca covers 153 hectares and is located within the municipality of Leganés. The Laguna de Maripascuala, which covers approximately nine hectares, is located within the park.

Sporting and leisure activities such as fishing, rowing and canoeing take place at the Laguna de Maripascuala. The Centro de Educación Ambiental Polvoranca offers free guided activities for families and other users.

The Parque de Polvoranca is considered an area for environmental education, with more than 400 plant species and diverse wildlife, particularly bird species. The Centro de Educación Ambiental Polvoranca uses the park’s community garden and rock garden as thematic resources in its educational programme.

The park also includes the historic ruins of the Polvoranca settlement.

Getting around

The linear Arco-Verde route RC5 is 6.363 kilometres long. It connects La Serna commuter railway station in Fuenlabrada with San Nicasio metro station in Leganés, passing through Bosquesur and Polvoranca.

The Arco-Verde route RC6 is a 3.299-kilometre round trip. It connects Ronda Oeste in Leganés with Alcorcón via Parque de Las Presillas.

The Bicisenda enables cyclists to travel from Polvoranca to the Bosquesur areas in Leganés. Fishing is possible at Lago Butarque.

The park is connected to Parque de Polvoranca. It has a cycle path that runs through the park and around the entire residential area.

Events

The Fiestas de San Nicasio in Leganés combine music, activities for children and religious events in honour of the city’s patron saint, San Nicasio.

Las Lunas del Egaleo is a cultural programme held in July at the Teatro Egaleo, featuring concerts, tribute shows, cinema and performances for children; admission is free for the public.

The patronal Fiestas de Butarque include more than one hundred activities organised by local peñas, as well as fairground rides at the festival grounds.
