In Getafe, the Mudéjar hermitage of Santa María Magdalena was demolished in 1549; construction of the present-day Catedral de La Magdalena began on its site. It was designed by the architect Alonso de Covarrubias.

History

The Hospitalillo de San José was founded in 1529; it is a two-storey building whose rooms are arranged around an inner courtyard with a cloister. The former Real Cárcel prison is now the Biblioteca Ricardo de la Vega. The ground floor was formerly used as a prison, while the upper floor served as a granary.

The Roman villa of La Torrecilla is located in Perales del Río in Getafe and is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Archaeological Zone category. It is arranged around an inner courtyard, or peristyle, and is one of the few examples of this type in the Comunidad de Madrid.

The National Monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus stands on the Cerro de los Ángeles, with the Ermita de la Virgen de los Ángeles beside it. Tourist visits are offered on the Cerro.

Culture

The Teatro Auditorio Federico García Lorca has 700 seats distributed across the stalls, two balconies and two amphitheatres. It was built on the site of a flour mill dating from 1920; after the mill ceased operating in 1950, it was acquired by Getafe City Council.

The Teatro Auditorio Federico García Lorca hosts theatre performances, musicals and other public events. Public events organised by Getafe City Council are also held at the Hospitalillo de San José. “Verano en el lago” is a cultural programme held every summer in Parque de La Alhóndiga.

For personal planning, the offerings can be distinguished by architectural history, archaeology, stage formats, the summer programme, park features and paths. For your personal planning, you can compare these topics separately and set your own priorities. Historic sites, archaeological evidence, stage formats, the summer programme, as well as park features and paths, stand alongside one another as different areas of interest. Different interests can each retain their own focus during further planning, without all sites and offerings being combined into a single category.

Landscape

The linear RL4 route of the Arco Verde connects the area around Soto de las Juntas with Perales del Río in Getafe. Its route passes through a landscape featuring gypsum cliffs, former Civil War trenches and the historic Canal del Manzanares.

Parque de La Alhóndiga has lakes, an open-air stage, a special children’s area, outdoor sports facilities and walking paths.
