Villa del Prado – Culture, Wine and the Río Alberche

Villa del Prado combines the 15th-century Gothic Church of Santiago Apóstol with the landscape along the Río Alberche: the church is classified as a Cultural Heritage Site, while the river offers clear water suitable for swimming and white sandy beaches.

Culture

The 17th-century Baroque chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Poveda houses the image of the town’s patron saint. The second chamber of the Herrerian church tower displays liturgical objects such as chalices, patens, reliquaries and priestly vestments.

Festivals and regional products

Día de la Caridad de la Virgen de la Poveda is a special festival in Villa del Prado. It takes place on Easter Monday after Mass in the town’s church, in the surroundings of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Poveda, and includes a pilgrimage to the chapel, an outdoor Mass, the distribution of bread, and three human towers performed by local residents in honour of the Virgin, known as Castillos Humanos Andantes. On Día de la Caridad, Empaná is traditionally eaten, a sweet bread dough filled with pieces of chorizo.

The Feria Huerta y Vino takes place every year in Villa del Prado’s Plaza Mayor and includes wine tastings, tomato and olive oil tastings, and wine tourism activities. A Fiesta hortelana organised by the Asociación de Horticultores and the Ayuntamiento promotes agricultural food products from Villa del Prado and the Community of Madrid.

Wine

The Museo del Vino en Villa del Prado is located at Plaza Mayor 1, 28630 Villa del Prado, Madrid. The Bodega Cooperativa Virgen de la Poveda offers guided tours of its winery and vineyards, as well as expert tastings.

During a visit to Bodega Vinos de la Poveda, you can learn about the winemaking process, taste some wines and explore the nearby vineyards on foot. The current building of Bodega Vinos de la Poveda was built in 1963. Bodega Sampedro is a family winery with origins in the 19th century and has offered wine tourism experiences with guided tours and tastings since 2021. It produces vermouth, including a sweet white vermouth made according to a family recipe since 2019; its vineyards include some century-old vines.

Paths and water

The Camino vecinal a Pelayos de La Presa passes through hilly terrain with native holm oaks, rockroses and pine trees. The Río Alberche irrigates the vineyards, olive groves and vegetable-growing areas of Villa del Prado.

The guided Las Fuentes circular walk is 4.75 kilometres long, easy, designed as a loop and has 60 metres of cumulative elevation gain; it conveys the history and cultural heritage of Villa del Prado. The route along the disused railway line lies within the El Gurugú municipal nature park. The seventh stage of the TransCAM runs from Griñón to Villa del Prado, crossing the Guadarrama and Alberche rivers along the way.
