Cervera de Buitrago at the El Atazar Reservoir

The Área Náutica de Cervera de Buitrago is located at the El Atazar Reservoir, where sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and stand-up paddleboarding are possible.

Water

The Área Náutica offers a slipway, jetties and a rescue and support service for navigation. At the same time, it is the only nautical area that provides access to the El Atazar Reservoir.

Trails

The six-kilometre, easy Camino del Atazar is a cycle-friendly circular route starting at Plaza de las Arcas; it follows the gravel track of the old road between Cervera de Buitrago and El Atazar. The Senda de los Prados crosses an old sediment-retention dam and then continues along the slope to the shore of the El Atazar Reservoir. Its route passes through the Prados de Jimena to an arm of the reservoir and alongside an old traditional apiary.

The Senda de los Prados begins on Calle de la Iglesia in Cervera de Buitrago, is 2.3 kilometres long and has an uphill elevation gain of 84 metres. La Dehesa del Soto is a 5.4-kilometre circular route starting from Cervera de Buitrago. The Camino del Molino is an easy route that begins and ends in the town centre and led to an old mill site, now submerged beneath the reservoir. The more than 70-kilometre circular Senda del Genaro connects the towns around the El Atazar Reservoir and passes through Cervera de Buitrago. Different route lengths and trail types help organise excursion planning according to scope and type of activity.

The local Carpetania trail network in Cervera de Buitrago comprises three signposted paths along the El Atazar Reservoir.

Nature and viewpoints

In the lower area of La Dehesa del Soto, holm oaks and ash trees grow, while the higher area is covered by rockrose with rosemary. La Dehesa del Soto is catalogued as a Monte de Utilidad Pública.

The Mirador de Cervera de Buitrago is located on the shore of the El Atazar Reservoir and offers views of the Sierra de la Cabrera, the Peña Negra massif and El Regajo. It is incorporated into the Camino del Molino and belongs to the viewpoint network of the Mancomunidad del Embalse del Atazar, whose viewpoints are equipped with information boards.

Culture and traditions

The Church of Santa María de los Remedios is a Baroque church built in 1538 that retains its original apse. It is the only surviving 16th-century building in the town and has a Moorish wooden coffered ceiling and a 19th-century bronze crucifix.

The Museo de los Sentidos features an interactive, nature-themed sensory trail involving smell, touch, hearing and sight. Traditional houses in Cervera de Buitrago combine regional granite and slate with wood around doors and windows.

The main festival of Cervera de Buitrago was traditionally celebrated on 18 and 19 December and is now held on the weekend closest to these dates. The Luminaria is a tradition in which a bonfire is prepared behind the Albergue in the Las Eras area and lit at midnight. The festivals and traditions of Cervera de Buitrago include a large Chorizada.
