Treviana: Romanesque Architecture, Wine and Trails

Culture

The Iglesia de Santa María La Mayor houses an organ dating from 1836. The church also preserves a Hispano-Flemish panel from the late 15th century depicting Christ as the Man of Sorrows.

The Capilla de la Concepción o de San Pedro is located in the San Pedro area, on a slope beside the Ea River and within the cemetery grounds. On the outside, the windows of the apse feature four depictions of harpies. Visitors can view the interior and exterior of a Romanesque church, understand the thickness of its walls at a passageway and see the preserved structural arch with its scaffolding construction. The site is still being developed.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Junquera is located 3 kilometres from Treviana, beside the Ea River and next to the road towards Haro. Its chancel belongs to the original 13th-century church, while the rest of the Latin-cross layout dates from the 17th century. A Gothic tower is attached to the north wall of the chancel.

The Centro del Románico has a screening room with an audiovisual programme, an exhibition room with information panels and stonework, as well as space for educational workshops. There is also a documentation room with an extensive library on the Middle Ages in general and Romanesque art in particular. On Sundays and public holidays, the centre is open from 12:00 to 14:00; for other times, visitors are asked to arrange an appointment in advance by telephone or electronically.

In the Santiago area, remains of the course of a Roman road have been preserved; it presumably connected to the road across the Obarenes towards Briviesca. Since 2010, events have also been held in Treviana, including medieval markets with historical stalls, concerts, lectures by researchers and historical re-enactments.

Landscape and Trails

Treviana lies on a south-facing slope and is protected from the northerly wind. The landscape includes interfluves and remnants of glacis surfaces covered with sandstone, divided by hills and elevations.

Field paths and local roads can be used for walking and cycling. The higher hills and slopes offer viewpoints over the landscape. La Solana is a path on a western slope with views of the valleys and several benches; purple and yellow irises bloom there in spring.

Roe deer, partridges, goshawks, badgers, foxes and wild boar, among others, can be observed in and around Treviana. The Camino del románico is an old path restored several years ago that leads to the Ermita de la Virgen de Junquera and follows the valley of the Río Aguanal.

The Paseo del Románico project envisages a themed trail intended for public use, with a landscape and tourism focus, connecting the Ermita de la Concepción with the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Junquera. The trail has been adapted for people with reduced mobility.

Wine and Local History

The wine cellars in the upper part of Treviana were established in the 18th century. Some of these cellars were carved out of the rock. A donation recorded in 873 is considered the oldest surviving document attesting to the existence of winegrowing in La Rioja.

On the first weekend of August, Treviana hosts an event featuring a musical procession through several wine cellars built into the slopes of the town. Wine and pintxos are sampled at the individual stops.

A bus line connects Haro and Treviana from Monday to Friday.
