Trefacio: Nature Park, Hiking Trails and Culture

Trefacio is one of the four municipalities in Lago de Sanabria y sierras Segundera y de Porto Nature Park. The municipality group also includes Galende, Cobreros and Porto. This gives the town a clearly defined location within the nature park, combined with several distinct landscape and cultural features that can be considered separately when planning a trip.

Nature and Bodies of Water

Trefacio is home to the Centro de Interpretación de la Trucha. From Puebla de Sanabria, the route initially follows the ZA-104 to El Puente and then the ZA-114 to Trefacio. These named road sections clearly place the centre along the connection between Puebla de Sanabria, El Puente and Trefacio.

La Corneira, an extensive stand of oak trees on the Tera River, is located near Trefacio. La Corneira can be reached via the road from El Puente to Trefacio. The oak woodland and its location on the river therefore form a distinct landscape feature within the immediate surroundings of Trefacio.

Hiking Trails

The Trefacio–Vigo de Sanabria hiking trail is located in Lago de Sanabria y sierras Segundera y de Porto Nature Park and is also known as Camino de Valtocino. Another trail runs between Trefacio and Villarino de Sanabria and is likewise located in the nature park. The two connections remain clearly distinct through their different destinations.

Landscape

The Trefacio–Murias route offers wide views of the oak forests in the valleys of the Trefacio and Tera rivers. It climbs a steep slope and opens up views of the glacial valley at the bottom of which Lago de Sanabria lies. Thus, both the river valleys and the lake bed of the glacial valley are among the named landscape features associated with this route.

The Trefacio–Murias route also passes through an area with extensive oak forests, abandoned agricultural land and wasteland. In addition to the wooded valleys, open areas and landscapes shaped by agriculture are therefore also found there. The route connects these various landscape elements in a single, clearly named trail.

Culture

The Church of San Mamés stands in Trefacio's town hall square. Its bell tower and façade stand out as distinctive architectural features. The old parish house is also located in the town, with an arch decorated with scallop shells and pilgrim stars. The church and parish house thus provide distinct architectural accents alongside the natural and trail-related features.

The aforementioned trails, river and woodland landscapes, and architectural features can be clearly distinguished when selecting travel themes: the hiking routes lead to different places, while the church and parish house form a separate cultural focus in Trefacio.
